As title, when I press clutch in, including in neutral and when I press it ever so slightly, I can hear bearings grinding away, so clutch release bearings are on the last legs. Question is...How long until clutch needs replacing? or it goes bang?
Replacement is £80 from AVS car parts and its the sachs replacement, comes with the whole fitting kit which aint too bad but changing clutch is a pain in the arsehole which is what I dread + I don't have the tools to do the job. (DH?)
-
8v clutch release bearing is in the end of the gearbox.
You can do it with the gearbox still in the car, you need to remove the end cap.
-
the bearing isn't part of a clutch kit usually and it is actually located under the green cover on the side of the box (and not where usual)
If your sure its the bearing you need that (around £8) and the green cover (around £8)
-
Interesting. What tools are needed for the job? Also, it is a hard job? Does it require any presses or specialist equipment or wll I be able to do it with a socket set and some basic tools?
-
a decent jack to lift the engine/drop the box for access (recommended) and something to prise the metal green cover of the box and I think that's about it (small hands/fingers help).....I can do them in about 5 minutes now
-
ah so only 5 mins to change the bearings? no need to use a bearing press or any complicated tooling?
-
nope it just behind the clutch lever (which may need the clip removing to get the bearing out?) and simply slots in
-
ah sounds like a pretty easy job then. GSF sel te release bearings?
-
yes...and I jacked the offside of the engine up on mine as clearance is fairly limited (this should tilt the box downwards)
-
really easy job m8!
as boney said...
if you search my posts somewhere there is a diagram guide on hoe to do it!!
btw - mine lasted 9 months!!

Nice one, cheers guys.
9 months? is that a good job well done then?
-
no, it lasted 8 months from when it started making a noise, lol!!
im not that bad, lol!
-
ah ok
Does anyone know if the GSF kit comes with any grease or is it not needed? Also will I need to replace gearbox oil??
-
no grease needed.....but while your there you could swap the box oil if you want, try some decent synthetic stuff if you really want your box to last
-
still need to do my oil, lol
-
my oil is only bout 2 months old hence why I rather keep it for the moment, I'll do a change next year at some point. I take it it won't be needed to be dropped.
-
Will not hurt in the short term making a noise.
-
no, just jack the n/s really high, lol :D

I buy mine from gsf..if your careful you maybe able to reuse but I'm guessing yours has being fitted since new and wont want to come out easily.....they prise off using a flat driver so it's possible to go slowly and reuse

nice one guys, thanks.

My mk2 had a dodgy release bearing when i first got it, changed the oil and the sound pretty much went away. Never caused me a problem and i drove that car for 8k ish miles.

I did an oil change on it about 2 months ago so doubt it's that.

yep thats it, the TO bearing is what americans call them+ it sits in the hole behind the finger
like he says you can go through the green cap but have to move the finger out the way or just take the 5th gear housing off the end to get to the bearing
-
so I need to take the finger out yeah?
-
either take the green cap off+ release the clip off the clutch arm+ rotate finger outta the way or take the 5th gear housing off, depends wether you want to check the finger? the bearing sits in that hole under the finger, its all explained on broke
-
easier to remove the finger right?
-
doesnt look particularly hard either way, just need a gasket or new end cap+ you dont have to complete,y remove the finger just swing it outta the way, he is just describing both at once
-
nice one dude, thanks
-
no worrys hope you get it sorted any ready for extreme supercharged power
-
called insurance to find out the cost of supercharging and it would be bout 700 more, so I'll skip that for this year at least
-
oh well no need to rush, gives you more time to find the best parts at the best prices

exactly mate  Exhaust manifold is at no extra cost on insurance so expect that and vernier pulley and remap to be next on the list!
