hi all,
I have a 96 8v GTi. I only have one key for the car. It is not a fob with buttons, I have to put the key in the car to unlock it.
I want to get another key for a spare, but a friend told me I will have to go to VW if I want a key that starts the car. He said I can get a key that will allow me into the car.
The reason is there is a transponder in the key fob that deactivates the immobilisor, is this true?
As I don't really want to pay 60 - 70 quid at VW.
Many thanks.

yes this is true im afraid, unless you purchase a usb cable called 'vag-tacho' or know someone with the software. oh, unless you have the original tags that came with the car from new with the lock and immob codes printed on them.
btw you can get any old locksmith to cut you a key that fit, just take it to vw to have it matched to the immobiliser. obviously have to buy a key that has a chip in it for the immob.

as above any locksmith can cut you a key but if you need a transponder key then vw's it is. There more like £120 btw
-
there have been other threads about this and i think there were cheaper options, do some searching
-
timpsons etc for £25 coded (unless you really want the torch and vw logo!)

Sounds like a more realistic price, many thanks

If you really want a cheaper way out simply tape the original chipped key somewhere near the steering column (out of harms way) and you can use as many unchipped keys as you want to start and drive the car once the chip is within a foot or so of the ignition.

The keys have a coded chip inside them that disable the immobiliser.

thats what i thought but didnt realise key cutters could do that, so all i need to buy is a key with a transponser in and they can cut it and code it?
-
sorted, just ordered a new key with chip for a tenner and il get local locksmith to code and cut it,happy days!
