Title: Im Back!!
Post by: R32UK on 19 January 2010, 13:40
Glad to say Im finally back in my mk6 gti. A much nicer place to be than the mk5 but i think thats probably down to the RNS510 as well as being better put together.

Collected the car to find black tar/paint all down one side. When I ask about getting it removed I was told its just tar... and to expect that on a white car. Obviously i wasnt going to buy that story as it was only on one side. So after a 1hr wait I got it back removed.

Then i drive to the exit of the dealership to find the car is popping and splurting. So i return to be told its running on vapours and came into them that way  . I very much doubt it as there was atleast 20miles on it when it left me. I asked if it would make the petrol station and the just shrugged . So i made him follow me there incase i ran out... the car shuddered and chugged all the way there.

A £5k+ job and they cant put a fiver of juice in.... sums up VW and their dealers tbh :undecided: Driving home i hit 80 (kph) and floored it to find the armrest went into a crazy rattle.. have yet to make it do it again, but i will be trying.

I collected my White GTI just before christmas and also noticed little black spots on some of the panels, didn't think much of it and then we had the bad weather so i put it im my garage and didn't take it out until about a week ago to give it a good wash but the black spots had started to RUST!

So i dont think its tar like the dealer said, easy to remove though.

get it right kev.. i said there is not much difference in the drive. the nicer interior was my reason for getting the MK6 so why would i say that

I will wait to see the full total it cost in the end. I believe we did get an approx price on the "guess the cost of repair" thread but that was before i convinced them my other scuffed wheel was because of the crash  :lipsrsealed:

Gil nice to here its back on the road mate,  Im hopefully getting mine back on wednesday,  ended up getting a SEAT alteaXL has a hire car from esure.  I didn't go through the company my insurer provided cos they were garbage.

Sundaydriver the spots you had on yours could have been metal fallout from a rail track or similar,  if its been parked up waiting to be delivery maybe at the docks.

I ended up with a few spots of that on the back of my ED30.  I discovered it when polishing - although on a steel grey car it was only visable in certain lights.  It simply picks off with a finger nail.

You're having no luck!  Any damage?

A 2" dent complete with scratching of paintwork next to the number plate. The pole was sticking out so hit it head on. It sure as hell wasnt there before

I think the xmas tree must have fallen over and the base pole was sticking out of the box. wtf are the chances :undecided:

I did something similar a while back, hence for the golf I leaped at the chance to spec the rear camera.

Even the best drivers amongst us make mistakes sometimes. This technology (incl sensors) is relatively cheap compared to cost of repairs/ hassle.

think your right there keelaw. im very competent at reversing but lets face it anything low and central when you are reversing you are just not going to see.

one incident and the repairs are going to cost twice as much as the sensors. I used to be against them but now i have seen the light... think of it as an insurance policy :embarassed:

I was the same - I thought sensors looked sh1t (which they do!) and were for old people who couldn't park.  Once I hit something and claimed over £1200 (£500 excess OUCH!) for a new rear bumper on my ED30 I realised that £400 for sensors wasn't such a bad idea!

Better safe than sorry.

Hopefully the dent will pop out with some expertise... otherwise a new boot lid which would be scary priced and another insurance jobbie.

Had a close look this morning now its brightened up.. last night i just got out of the gym so was tired and furious I couldn't even bare to look properly. Its not as bad as originaly thought. Its just to the right of the number plate... might just have to get myself some kind of cover made up to hide it

otherwise its dent masters.. again!

Good Luck with it mate..I know how you feel I managed to drive out of a parking space with my brand new  GTI MK V (1 week) ever so careful in the pouring rain ....when suddenly I heard an awful screetching noise....on the righthand side .

Running out of the car I noticed a very low steel parking fence (the ones you can pull up and lock or pulldown and unlock) standing up...

I MANAGED TO SCRATCH THE ENTIRE MONZA BEYOND REPAIR...

I wouldn't be without rear sensors either. I had a guy in Pontefract do mine for £200 (cos I wasn't prepared to pay VW £400 for front and rear). Mine were the first carbon grey ones he did and it's just an audible warning (rather than the flashy VW one). But I think they're worth every penny. I'm a very good reverser but there are still hidden "traps" which any of us could miss.
Good to see the beast back on the road around our part of Leeds R32.

Hey bud,

Firstly congrats with your new wheels  where's the pics! bloody "blind spot" objects can sometimes cause serious damage... also had a similar experience when my builders left some brick force on my garage floor.... as I pulled in (incline) I drove straight over it dragging it along after it caught the lower lip of my front bumper... (was still in the megane at the time) had to get the entire front bumper resprayed  Man- I hate those type of incidents...

So you're enjoying the fwd experience again... Great cars the Gti's...

Any photos? Im thinking of retro some on mine.

A rear view camera question for those with them, what are they like in the dark and only having the rear lights/reversing light as light?

Don't think I could be without one. You can see in the dark no problem.

The reason i ask is my house is in pich black on a night with no street lights near so only light will be from the cars rear lights and i have to reverse up the drive, turn 90 degrees into the garage. Im trying to decide to go with parking sensors or rear camera.

Wouldnt the rear camera be pointless as you said youself, theres no light? You will just get black screen with a wall light up from the rear lights which you can see anyway out the back window.

I fitted my very own reverse cam into my VW badge on my MK5.  It was from something like reversecameras.co.uk and was only about £50.  I still have the camera somewhere.
Anyway - even in a pitch black night, the camera gave a reasonable display on the screen.  Obviously daylight or a lit street was much better, but a dark car park was no problem.

I hope the factory VW camera is as good as my home made one!

The camera is incredibly good imo. If it was twice the price I'd still go for it. On a dark night you get a much better bigger, brighter view with the camera than looking over your shoulder, especially with the dark rear window. There's an almost 'night vision' feel to it. And then there's the ability to get safely within one or two inches of the car behind. Much closer than with the continuous tone of sensors. Only downside is you don't get any front protection

I orderered it as a gimmick, a party piece, but now I wouldn't want a car without one.
