Title: Mark 2 Servicing
Post by: richy on 23 October 2004, 01:04
Hi.  If I was to buy a 95,000 mile Mk2 16v GTI, what sort of things (mechanical-wise) might be on the way out?  Gearbox perhaps??

I'm just trying to work out what sort of costs I might incur soon after purchase.

Any input appreciated.  Cheers,
Rich

also if on test driving theres any strange vibrations on the take up of the clutch/movement , then accelration and deceleration then its possible the engine mounts are worn, this is also a common prob along with others metioned!!

Gaz ;D

a 16v with 95k shouldnt have any mechanical gremlins. as long as its been well looked after.

if anything you might find 2nd gear syncro slightly worn. but this can be rectified with a decent gearbox oil, and a weighted shift throw

my new 16v has 135k on it, only major things ive had to fix are

rear caliper seized
oil pressure sender blew
gearbox mount
electric window failed.

and none of them are really that bad a job to fix

even a new set of piston rings n bearings shouldnt be needed until well past 125k
