hi ppl getin a knocking noise coming from front of drivers side been and had it put up on the ramps there is a slight movement coming from ball joint and slight movement in passanger side wishbone arm can any one tell me wat could be knocking pls
-
worn ball joint and bushes. quite possibly the anti roll bar bushes too!
-
roll bar bushes are fine
-
more than likely the worn ball joint youve mentioned , if your anitroll bar bushes are ok
-
theres a slight tear in the ball joint rubber could that still make it knock
-
well the tear in the rubber boot isnt going to make it knock but if there is excess play in the joint its self because it got dry and worn then it could cause a knocking noise , if its worn id replace that first as its going to need doing come mot time anyway , if the knocks gone it was that, if not check antiroll bar bushes / wishbone bushes and shock / top mount etc.... also worth checking trackrod end and tie rod from steering rack for play as these could also give a 'knock' effect when going over bumps etc

il replase the ball joint tomorrow are they pain in arse do
-
never changed one on a mk4 before, done mk2/3's and there easy i doubt the mk4 will be too different from earlier models?? just need a good jack , axle stand , a bar to lever down and out of hub carrier and sockets / spanners... and of course a new ball joint.
should only take an hour if your pretty mechanically minded.
-
il give it a go n hope for the best

ball joints are an arse, the CV joint is in the way
-
It's not too bad with two people on it. The ball joint is on a plate that has threaded lugs on it - those can snap off quite easily and leave you with 3 spinning bolts through the arm. Lots of penetrating fluid needed!
