Title: R testdrive
Post by: carl1 on 16 January 2010, 23:43
To start with this is not my final thoughts on the car or a detailed testdrive as it was only 15-20 mins long and their was a little traffic about near a city centre.

The cars apperance. Black 3dr 19" alloys and leather. I like black cars especially on a summers day, but it doesnt do the R any favours really. I wasnt keen on the front bumper from the pics ive seen on the net but i quite like it in the flesh not as max power as i first thought, definatly a grower. Rear lights, i think everyone agrees they look very neat.So overall a nice looking not in yourface car that didnt look 34k ish at all if im honest.

The drive, this car had only 125 miles on it so its unfair to give it my final verdict. Started car and there was that familiar sound of my mk5 ed30 ticking over, strange for a few seconds as this is R and it sounds like a gti. Anyway drove off taking it easy, first impressions i dont notice much lag, well not S3 style lag, it feels like gti a bit but more heavy, but not as noticable as between mk5 gti and mk5 r32.
I press on a bit, quite surprised sounds ok for a four pot, feels quite quick but then i hit traffic again. Then its just general driving short bursts nowhere i can really blast it. As i said only 15-20 mins not a enough to convince me.

I know its brief but these are my first impessions
it feels a lot nimbler than r32, not quite gti
steering was more heavier than it gti
fairly quick, feels a lot better than a s3
sounds ok but obvously its no r32
i didnt feel special like a R32, i didnt get that i want this car feeling.
i wouldnt tell anyone i paid 30k for this car.
I was disapointed to be honest.

got a couple of pics i will post but they are not the best.

I went to the next dealers, Rising blue 5dr, cloth. WOW i cant belive the difference a colour makes, its a couple of shades darker than DBP but not quite as nice as DBP. i like the cloth seats aswell. Im still undecided. I think if i could get one for £30k id have one.

I've just seen a 5dr Rising blue manual at Stockport VW
the rising blue is stunning in the flesh... I'm well chuffed!
Also the interior felt great the cloth looked awesome and was uber comfortable/ supportive in equal measures.

It only had the 18" wheels but looked low and mean non the less. I was tempted to buy it but it was lacking in options so I'll hang on for mine.

I asked how they got this one when I'd read that it was customer orders only? He said it is cust orders only but some dealers have been sent introductory stock and they've had no say in the colour/spec or options.

the rising blue one i seen had 18" wheels and they looked ok,not too small not massively different from the 19". Also the actual wheel has grown on me a little after seeing them in the flesh

Many thanks for posting ... sounds like there are quite a few about suddenly

Not keen on the black one either, look forward to seeing a white one with black 19" wheels

Anybody seen any around the dealers in Leeds / York / West Yorkshire yet ?

Looking at my signature photo (DBP)  and the Rising Blue photo above, the colours look almost identical ????

I know - I used to have Mk5 R32 in DBP and it was definitely faster than my previous Mk5 R32 in Silver.

As rising blue is a shade darker than DBP, does that make it faster still?

I'm surprised at the positive comments on the standard cloth, as most have been negative up to now. Maybe I can save £1700.

I called my dealer on Friday to ask if they had one... He didn't belive there were any until he checked his dialogue system.  To say he was angry when he found out that there were TWENTY already was an understatement considering he was sure they were only for customer orders.  Unfortunately for us Scots, and those in Wales and Ireland - they are ALL in England!
He wrote an email to VW customer services demanding an explanation.

I thought it would be pretty obvious...  He was told he could only get customer orders, yet other dealers are getting them without asking for them.  I totally understand his point, as to be honest I'm pretty annoyed too.  I put a deposit down in May 2009 for this car!  Surely the customer orders should be turning up before some random stock cars.

Went back this morning, carbon grey, they were 19" (looked like 18's), leather and RCD510.  £34K!!!!!!!!

Apart from the ludicrous price, it really didn't look anything special at all, it was next to a new Polo and the front bumpers looked identical in shape (and similar to newer Audis with the two 'pointy' bits.

Not impressed, think the GTI looks much better but I must admit i'd love a mapped R, all wheel drive and around 320 horses would be fun, i have struggled to get all my power down to the road in this recent weather.

I think in the right colourway the R would look much better than the one I have seen, maybe blue with the black wheels or white with black as has been shown.

Post by: gossa on 18 January 2010, 20:19
Forgot to add, there are little plastic guards that are attached to the wheels arches, presumably to stop debris flying off of the wider wheels and tyres? Look rubbish and a complete afterthought. For £34K I would want custom wider arches if the wheel/tyre choice is an issue.

I don't want to sound too down on the R, those that have ordered are obviously not put off by the premium but I just wanted to give my thoughts. I just looked at it today, looked outside at my mapped MK6 and could not see where VW have come up with the pricing.

Yeah - I've seen those in photos. Exact same thing attached to rear wheel arches of Merc C-classes with 18" alloys (std is 17"). Must be some weird German law.

They don't look anything like that but similar in function I suppose. Like I said, they look like an afterthought. I know it's not in the same category cost wise but surely VW could have made a wider set of wings like the RS4 or M3 if the wheels require it? They're only 235's though, can't see the issue?

Martins in Camberley. It had 19's, leather and sat nav and if I was 25, in the market for a FWD hatchback and female, I'd buy it.

Not sure why they're required - perhaps to do with the tyre protuding out of the wheel arch.

European construction and use regs regarding the amount the arch must protrude beyond the tyre.
Title: Re: R testdrive
Post by: gossa on 18 January 2010, 22:42
in that case I wonder if they are removable because there is no way the 235's protrude from the arch.

Was over at VW Huddersfield yesterday and not a Golf R in sight. In fact I only managed to spot one R32. However the showroom was missing a couple of cars so I suspect they could be awaiting some new stock

I wonder if anyone has had the chance to compare how the 18 in wheels drive compare with the 19 in in terms of ride/noise/handling .
Also on the photos the appearance does not look hugely different between the 18 vs 19 i wonder how they are in the flesh
I also note that the recurring theme of the car being overpriced relative to the gti I find misleading when you factor in std options 18 in wheels xenon then pay for the body kit rear leds awd and 40 kw !
still many months away down under so i have to satisfy myself reading about first hand experence overseas
