To me, at this moment in time and for my current circumstances it's a perfect car.
What do you think??
Open for 30 days and I hope I've set up the poll properly.
-
As i don't have mine yet i don't know. At this present time i don't like mine. Its took up every spare minute of my free time for the past months, Its made me have to deal with people with no common sense. Its wasted many days of my holiday entitlement to try and sort it out.
It better be bloody worth it!
Good point is theres a good bunch of people on here,
-
Perhaps I should have mentioned the rules.
Non mk 6 owners are BANNED, totally banned and well, just banned/forbidden/verboten and will end up in court or (worse) if they continue to post false votes.
I know you guys/gals are totally frustrated with your massive delays, if it helps I waited 4 months or so and was one of the first to order simply out of reputation and experience of previous GTIs and a quick test drive on the Mk6 GTI release day.
Anyway, all frustated mk6 orderers are BANNED, forever, permanently and until their GTI arrives and they've fallen in love with it.
-
I waited just 6 weeks last May from order to delivery and still give it 10 out of 10.
In fact, since it's been sat in the snow for three weeks and I only drove it yesterday for the first time in ages I'll give it 11 out of 10!!!!!

So far one of my favourite cars I ever owned. Almost a perfect car for me to drive to work
For
1. Adequate performance for everyday use. Good midrange. Turbo lag acceptable. Plenty of tuning potential.
2. Reasonable economy if gentle with the throttle. Manufacturer combined figure a bit optimisstic. Still not too bad.
3. Good driving position and pedal feel. Brake easy to modulate. Manual box very slick. Good ergonomics. Make driving in town a doddle
4. I find this car quite attractive without causing envy.
5. Wind noise is very well suppressed. Very stable with crosswind. Ride on poor roads with ACC COMFORT is exceptional for a fast hatch.
6. Safest car in its class Top score in EuroNcap
Not so good
1. Ludicrous list and option pricing However when compare with Golf GTD, v. good value
2. Boring engine tone. Sounds no difference 2000rpm or 6000rpm.
3. The interior still have too much hard plastic
4. Rivals got more BHP but they all use more fuel and higher road tax
5. Need a bit more rear leg room and bigger boot
6. Carbon grey a nightmare to keep looking clean
-
herbie911, your not so good list is not so good, so all's good yeah?
-
Im getting bored of the MK5/MK6 GTI need a change!!!!
-
herbie911, your not so good list is not so good, so all's good yeah?
I gave my Golf 9/10. The long 'Not So Good' list only worth -1
It 'might' not be the best hot hatch to drive but I think it is still best hot hatch to own-better than even the Golf R!
-
Love
- Subtle but purposeful red flashes and styling touches that make it nothing else but a GTI, the R and R32 before it has no styling identity other than the R badge
- Perfect size - small enough for the city, parking and for my wife to drive; yet practical and spacious enough in the rear for 3 passengers
- Boot size is fine for my golf clubs (tho a slight negative is that I have to take my driver out of its bag, but it'll still fit the boot)
- Performance is fine and it holds its own, tho not mind-blowing
- Cheap road tax and decent economy
- A fantastic one-car-fits-all-roles
Love less
- Jack of all trades and master of none? (other than perhaps quality and refinement)
- £26k is a lot of money (tho against the R and the GTD its a relative bargain!
- erm....
- lemme think
- the petrol cap is very plasticky?!
-
i will endeavour to return to this thread *if* i get my own... hopefully

I drove mine tonight from Dorset to Plymouth and back, some good driving roads. I haven't driven it for a few week as I've been driving my van but, I really had forgotten how good this car is. Mine is Revo remapped and the power is just endlessly on tap, I really can't think that anything faster would have been any more fun.
My only criticism is that one of the fog light bulb access covers keeps falling out.
Best car i've ever owned. I gave it 9/10 because it should come as standard with the performance that the remap delivers.
-
Gave mine a 7
It is a very complete car and very satisfying to own. Agree with all the owners on here.
But,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
I guess I wanted more power, a bit more hardcore.
The fwd traction is poor in the wet. The trick RDS? traction thingy does not really work. I came from a MKV 4 motion which was brilliant in all weathers but rather dull.
Suppose what I really wanted / needed was the R version.
It is a company car so will have to keep it 3 years, then decide whether to change it for what maybe a Mark7 R ? or buy it off the lease company and Revo it.
Still, will be an enjoyable 3 years to decide.
-
A lot.
It always puts a smile on my face.
-
Poll closed now, thought I'd share the results.
Seems most of you love your GTI.
Some of you hate them or is it just the waiting....

I missed the poll
Before this car I drove a 2nd Generation MINI Cooper 1.6 (that may be influential) So far, 12k miles into my Mk6 GTI I can say the following:
LOVE:
-the styling - I think VW really got it just right on the new car
-the branding - the R32/R models are too similar to the Scirrocco R and Seat Cupra R (it's the same badges) - I really love all the red detailing and GTI styling in the car (partly because mine is red)
-The exhaust sounds pretty good - quiet enough on the road - loud enough for fun
-the standard kit I found pretty good (try speccing a Cooper S to GTI levels and you'll be near enough the same price and that's before going to a John Cooper Works)
-The performance. Sure other manufacturers quote more bhp but I'm yet to find a stock VXR/ST/Type R or Cupra that can pull away from my GTI. Partly the reason is that VW are conservative. The other part is that the GTI engine pulls very well over a broad range. The VXR turbo is either on or off and the Type R needs its revs. The GTI is consistent.
- The space - this is mostly because I came from a Mini.
- the consumption is pretty good. I regularly get up to 45 mpg on my commute. Sometimes I get over 50. Even when driving quickly I get around 30-34mpg which is pretty good for 2.0 turbo
WHAT I DONT LOVE:
- red paint which shows swirl patterns
- carpet materials which seem to get dirtier easier and stay dirtier than my MINI mats
- the fact that my GTI is so good because it has stopped me liking any other car
-

Carpet could be dirtier due to exceptionally bad weather lately?
Agree on second point, I've stopped buying car mags completely! (saving a small fortune each mth!)

HOW???!!!

Yeah, I average 25- 30 mpg. Then again I have loads of short journeys in London :(

Re: How much do you love your mk6 GTI??
How much,
Mines due early March.
Lets see,
I have now got 3 gallon of wax oil, The compressor presure regulator is fixed for the waxoil process.
The rubber lifting pads are ordered.
The wax/polish/sealer for the paint and wheels is soon to be ordered.
The paint for the hubs is ordered.
The rubber front mats are ordered.
The extra garage space will be sorted this weekend and maybe next ready for it coming.(thats a big task!).
It will not be used daily till the bad weather is over in a month or so and will sit in said heated/dehumidified garage next to the mk1.
Im looking at the seat lifter badges, and door sill trims.
I may treat it too LED rear lights and 18" wheels before its let out.
GAP insurance is too sort out.
and im sure there is more

Maybe should start a thread on this but the best I've seen on mine is about 41mpg, and that was downhill on the M8 when the traffic conditions were holding me to about 50mph. It only held at that level for a few miles.
I'm averaging about 32mpg overall. My daily work run is about 10 miles straight on an A road, no starts and stops, and I don't often get above about 32mpg.
I'll start a new thread, it's interesing.

When I'm getting my good fuel consumption (45mpg+) I'm on the motorway usually sitting about 55-60 with the cruise control on. I find that the speed in the golf can creep up so quickly if you don't pay attention so I just set a speed and let it cruise. If I was to sit at 70 though I do notice that the mpg falls to the low 40's and high 30's.
Sitting at 55 though does get you some funny looks so I wouldn't advise it for all. Where I live the motorways are pretty good with 3 lanes so it's not too much hassle sitting on the inside taking it gently.
-
I did a 350 mile round trip last week and managed 45mpg. That was cruising at 70 for the most of the time.
Very impresssive.
My MarkV GT TDI 140bhp managed 50mpg for the same trip.
Forgot to add I only use Shell Optimax

Are these car's re-mapped? Or am I missing somthing here? I get 18MPG in my Ed30 in london on MW lucky to get 28-30 at 70 mph!!
-
Nope I just have a completely standard Mk6 GTI 210 with DSG...
-
Well the best I've had was 38mpg that was at a steady 60mph on a dual carriageway.
I am very pleased with it try and get those kind of figures out of a Focus ST or the like.
Gizzy

I've just been on some of the VXR owners forums and even they are finding that the cars are more economical than thought. Some of the boys in Astra VXR's are sitting at about 41mpg on long trips.
Although this is not as good as over 50mpg in the GTI, I find it very encouraging to see people with other makes are also being pleasantly surprised by their cars.
With all the pressure nowadays to save the planet, it's nice to know you don't have to buy a Prius to be economical. Again this is one of the reasons I would pick a GTI/ hot hatch over something like an Impreza or EVO as the more powerful cars are too thirsty IMO.
Sometimes it's often a case of 'our car is better than theirs' but I find it refreshing that we can all be happy.
-

OMG - that is downright lethal! Going too slowly on a motorway is as bad as going too fast.
Too many resons to list, but I'm too shocked to write properly. And from a GTI driver as well...
-

Roadrage alert. I hate it when trucks are having to overtake cars on the inside lane. Forcing all traffic into the outside lane.
-
Just to clear my name, half the motorways where I live are 50 speed limits because its in and around glasgow.
Don't hate me too much lol
-
Wow, who bought the GTI and have voted it 1 out of 10 ?
What dont you like about it ?

He's probably heard me shouting already. ;)

Nope, not had anything from VWKev yet...
I know what folk mean about sitting too slowly on the motorway. I'm not one of those people.
When I say I'm sitting at around 55-60 then its usually when the general motorway traffic speed is around 65-70. If the motorway is all clear of congestion and everyone is moving at a good pace then I go up to 70 and sit there.
I prefer to drive smoothly at a consistent speed and not have to brake/accelerate/brake/accelerate due to the traffic.
Is the minimum speed limit not 40 or 45mph though on a motorway?
-
whats wrong with doing 55-60 on a motorway ?
-
whats wrong with doing 55-60 on a motorway ?
Nothing wrong if one keep to the left hand lane!
Bump into another Nissan Primera today doing 55mph in the middle lane when there are no cars on the left!

Of course, no-one is going to do 55 on the left hand lane, well... at least anyone with half a brain.

lol - not a motorway then surely?!!?
Mind you the M1 seems to permanently have average speed cameras forcing everyone to drive at 55mph (got to use the 10% leeway )
-
whats wrong with doing 55-60 on a motorway ?
nothing, only way a GTD can overtake a GTI

'S true. I got 5 points on the M8 at about midnight on an empty road, about a month after I got my XR2, because I didn't notice the limit.
