i have a 1990 1.8 gl mk2 golf that is running like a sick dog  changed all elec components inc plugs, leads, dis cap and arm, tried another coil but it still doesnt tick over, tried looking to see what carb it is in haynes manual but cant find the right one, whilst driving mid range to high revs is fine but at low revs it doesnt want to tick over, which is a right pain especially at junctions and traffic lights. so do i need a new carb or take it off and clean it, or is it something else, please help before i set fire to the f**kin thing...... bad

I would of said clean out the carb and and check vac hoses (dont know where they are on carb models though).
Check all the earths aswell
Failing that maybe check the coil?
Probs many other more helpful suggestions on there way when people see this post
Good luck
EDIT - Sorry didnt realise you already checked coil
Might be a bit of a long shot aswell but could have a play with the idle and mixture screws as per a haynes

It probably has a pierburg carb which are tricky to sort once they go wrong (unless its been changed for a weber then it won't be in Haynes) but its more likely that you have an air leak in the thick rubber gasket between the carb and the inlet manifold, it gets sucked tight when running at higher rpm, alternatively iirc there is a short vac pipe that comes off the gearbox end of the inlet manifold and links into the servo vac pipe, this tends to get smegged & split on the underside where you can't see it, again when you give the engine some revs it sucks the split shut so OK at higher RPM but will not tickover, usually feels like its only running on 3 cylinders at idle.

Is the corrigated pipe in good nic that goes to the manifild, I think this helps prevent the carb icing. On some cars this can be missing all together

its sounds like the idle valve is clogged to me

also the pipe needs to be cloth not metal.

Jezza16v - Nice one it was the vac hose you said on the gearbox side of the manifold. it had a large perished hole in it. cut a piece of coolant hose and fitted that and all back to normal! this was my mates car and he had a big grin on his face ! cheers again dude

No prob chap. I would get a proper bit of fuel grade hose for it as soon as you can, I botched mine with coolant hose and it went off again very quickly, killed by fuel vapour I guess.

ok kool ill pass that on to him
cheers dude
