I went to my car this morning, for a lovely day out with my girlfriend, shopping at Bristol, but the fatherless son thing won't start!
It turns over, and sometimes when I turn the ignition off (after letting the motor go several times) it sounds as if it's about to start up but it just dies. It's not the start motor as that is relatively new, so what could it be?
Cheers all.

ticks over ? as in runs ? or did you mean turns over ?

could be a lot of things shady, and over the net fault finding is never easy, take it no Breakdown cover ? best get that sorted if your getting a mk4 :lipsrsealed:
-
Maybe the spark plugs have died?

Did have breakdown cover but didn't renew, should of really lol! Bloody hell.
Okay I'll have to just wait for now as I'm meant to be going out today, and got things to do so will leave the car alone, see what happens. Maybe it'll spring back to life, and don't worry, chuff, I'll be sure to get cover on the MK4 lol!
I doubt the spark plugs are faulty as they are only a year old.
-
thats true shady but your motor is fcuked isnt it,
with all the oil your burning etc the plugs could be fooked - etc etc etc etc
Find a mate ( theres another problem ) with AA cover ,
as its the card holder who is covered and see if they will ( another problem coming up )
call the AA out to your ( final problem ) mk3

So spark plugs could be an idea? I have no friends that are with the AA.
Problem after problem, can't afford to buy another car at the moment either which sucks.
-
Chuff has a point if it is burning oil the plugs will be fooked by now.
-
I'm gonna go get some new plugs then, see if that helps, if not then I'll leave it for now and sort it next week. Stupid tugboat.
-
Chuffs post just got Wayne Approved

-
Shady check to make sure one of your spark plugs isnt loose,i know this sounds obsurd BUT this happened to my mk3 a while ago and as i wiggled the Ht leads no2 plug was pretty much totally undone!

Too be honest, looking at them they are all completely fecked. I've replaced them and a little more life was happening, it really wants to start but won't. A mechanic I know thinks it could be moisture in the dizzy, so is there anyway for me to take this away, something I can do before buying a new one?

Is it safe to do that? Lol! Should I try and clear any moisture first then spray WD40 in it?
-
WD40 repels the moisture.
-
yep, DO IT mate
Wd -40 is awesome, this is one of the many things its used for mate, done this many times, even yesterdahy oin my mums ford ka
-
a mates montego became wd40 dependant
-

montego, dont see them so much now, we (me and the lads) once chipped in and bought a mg turbo one, back in 1997 for £500... it was pretty quick hahaha
-
You could get a dizzy + dizzy cap from a scrappy for real cheap. Also try replacing the plug leads, if they look too ugly

Maybe it has had enough and called it a day by losing compression.

I hope not, otherwise it's new engine time lol! I'm going to sort out the dizzy tomorow, and if it doesn't work, Adam a has kindly offered to get the AA out for me on his breakdown cover. :)

Mikester is right.. WD-40 repels the moisture..
WD-40 stands for Water Displacement and was perfected on the 40th attempt
new dizzy and rotor arm will be pennies from your local GSF/ECP
check all conx with HT leads, battery connection etc
-
coil pack could be burnt out too? best thing to do is let someone have a look or yea do it on a mates aa cover

I never knew that was what WD40 stood for, you learn something new every day. :)
I'm hoping it'll all be sorted tomorrow, if not, looks like it'll be the AA guy telling me what needs to be done/changed, and we will go from there, I hope this things runs until August, then I can scrap it.
-
Thanks to all who put in advice (and sarcasm as usual lol). Car is running again fine now, it was moisture in the dizzy so WD40d it up and all is gravy. :afro:

Glad you got it sorted.. Always a relief when its something simple !!
-
It's definitely a relief that it was simple, because my engine is fecked I was thinking it might be giving up the ghost but thankfully the little bugger wants to keep going haha!
-
Rubber glove, cut fingers out, big strong rubber band, HT leads through fingers then rubber band around bottom of dizzy and :afro:.
