Title: Which looks better..... Golf R or Golf GTI.
Post by: JellyCat on 15 January 2010, 21:58
Thought the following poll would be fun, there's some interesting comments about following the Golf R pics in the Warrington VW dealer.
Ok there wheels are blocked up but it's a bit of fun but may give an interesting result!

Well like the mk5 if im truthful i would want a combination of the two. A GTI-R would be nice

Exterior,
I like the R side better,
I like the GTD rear,
I like the R's LED rear lights best,
I prefer the GTI grill,
I like the R front bumper design better,
I like the R's Day time running lights better,
I like the GTI fogs.
I like the R's 19" wheels more.
I would prefer the R's brakes.

I want a GTI badge as people actually know what it is!

Interior,
I like the GTI cloth interior design but it would be much better in half leather!

I just could not pick one over the other in standard spec on looks alone.

The GTI is undoubtedly the better looking car  but I'll still buy the R.

I'm going to sit on the fence.
I like aspects of both, and the GTD too whilst we're at it.......  :nerd:

As above - its a GTI forum and although there are a few prospective Golf R owners, the majority are GTI - so I would guess the results will be about 90% v 10% by the time everyone has voted!!

I like both cars...
I like the R from the side as it has skirts instead of black plastic strips.
I like the R rear lights - but I prefer the GTI split exhausts.
I like the R front better - although the grill is a little understated.
I hate Monza's... so I prefer the R wheels.
Interior wise - I don't think there is any difference apart from a couple of badges here and there.

The cloth interior on the R is sh1t,  I like the recaros but not at the price!! so it would have to be leather and VW leather is pretty poor!

I prefer the back split exhausts on the GTI but like the leds on the R, could mod them on to my GTI at some point then I'd be a very happy bunny

Only bit of the R I'd like to have is the LEDs at the front.

Otherwise GTI all the way!  :)

Okay whilst we're pulling them to pieces, I like the Rs bumper, rear lights and blue needles plus the darker door inserts. And the proper side skirts whilst I'm here.
I like the GTIs wheels and errrr......that's about it.
I like the GTDs discreet exhaust and honeycomb grille (probably on my own there) and subtle seat pattern.

Oh, and I'd like that lot with and R36 engine please Mr Chairman of VW

GTI looks, with R brakes, running gear and engine...
GTI 18" wheels - only fractionally better then the R wheels.

Recaros, in half leather with GTI cloth centres.

Winner.
Where do I sign?

I don't get it! am I not allowed to give an opinion? It was hardly a hysterical rant just what I like and don't about the R.  Which is what was asked.  So p1ss off and go burn some testosterone.

When I see the pair of them side by side like this, I think the R front it much better.  I like the LEDs, and the way they have a bit of blue between the black bits.  The GTI one just looks too plain.  I do like the GTI grill, but then I think the R one looks good too.  I understand what people say about it looking like a GT grill - but hey ho!

I am of course assuming that is RB that the GTI is in.

Rising Blue Metallic is not available on the GTI in the UK, only Germany. I think it looks wrong anyway - blue bodywork and red detailing not right IMHO.

Can you be more specific about WHY you think the leather quality is poor I have ordered Vienna Black Leather on the GTI (after factory) so I can still make up my mind...my first impression was good quality, I had a sample ...and sat in the Sirocco with leather...

I am a happy bunny since I will soon have the split exhausts as well as the Led Tail lights on my GTI...

Best mate has a mk5 with leather, the car is only 3years but the leather has gone all saggy and badly wrinkled it also has a tear in the drivers seat just from use.

My Peugeot 307 had leather seats and after 3 years it was as good as new.

ETTO tho!

Apart from the fact there's not a great deal of actual leather there, the leather that is used isn't very high quality. Like gizzy's friend, I've found it ages quickly. The stuff in my old Touareg was good, but not what they use in the Passats and Golfs.

Agree with the quality of the Touareg leather quality, my old man has a V10TDI (for sale) and even after 4 years looks great, much better than the new Q7. Leather suppliers use plenty of tricks to hide imperfections. The leather in a Golf is skived to a very thin thickness. One of the reasons I didnt specify leather is that i know how much of a rip off it is; the additional cost of leather over cloth is approx. £300 per car at most.

As to which looks better, at the moment, the R, but thats only because I havent seen one in the flesh yet....
As the old saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

eric, the scirocco seats r much better so dont use that to decide. i down graded from leather to cloth once i realised that the golf seats in leather r s-it.

I am definitely gonna contact the dealer to get him to order better leather.....it would be a nightmare to find my leather to go bad after 2 years or so...thanks guys

Edit: I have mailed him (without revealing my source ) and said that if the leather is the same as on the MK V I will make it a "no go" and want (to pay extra) better quality.

Post by: JJH on 20 January 2010, 14:29
Eric, be careful you dont go wasting money. The appearance of the leather seats is not only influenced by the quality of the leather but the pattern engineering that goes into making the covers. You can have the worlds finest leather but if the pattern is just alittle out the seat will still look crap.  The main area of concern on these seats is the thigh bolsters closest to the doors. The reason it creases so badly on occasion is a lack of tension in the pattern, the resistance to change in that area relies on the foam, other areas of the seat have much more restricted movement due to the retention cords, tapes and clips attaching the cover to the seat frame. The reason cloth covers appear better is that the cloth manufacturers are able to control the stretch charactisitcs in a way that cannot be acheived with leather. You could quite easily find that whoever you use, the risk of creasing etc to the blosters remains. Good luck,,

There is also another issue I overlooked but could be in my advantage.. :smug:

I have 2 friends who ordered aftermarket leather on there new Saab....comparing that with the "original" leather upholstery they both discovered that their upholstery in both cases was done at a rather visual  :lipsrsealed: higher standard ...

Very amazing since I always thought the opposite (no substitute for leather out of the factory :undecided:)...but that seems not always true..

You are not accusing me are you....

I had a little booklet in front of me at the dealer to choose from.(say 10 types/colour of leather) ..mind you the Vienna was in it as well so I took that one...more being afraid of overlooking mismatching colour combinations when finished in the interior...
I even could spec the stitches...red, black or silver...again I choose black to stay safe...

what are the range of prices for bespoke leather?

Obviously for now I know only the aftermarket Vienna...I pay 1475 euro for that leather that is for 100% (= no leather look anymore) and another I think 500 euro for heated seats (winterpackage) but I do loose the "standard" electrical side adjustment on the chairs.....

I probably know some other prices next week when the dealer contacts me...

BTW The aftermarket upholstery will be done via the VW Importer PON....and I have seen amazing results so far on Audi....

I think the MkVI (and MkV) GTis look f-a-b tbh.

It'd be better if the R had something to distinguish it like the red 'lipstick' the GTi has.

Perhaps blue lipstick?

Odd but i was thinking the same, since they used crome on the GTD.

what are the range of prices for bespoke leather?

There are a few guys on the Scirocco forum have had their cloth seats re-covered with leather for a little over £1000.  They can then choose colour and stitching colour, and say the quality is much better than the original VW.  The only problem is that its not authentic - but who really cares?!

I think that the leather interior is an absolute rip-off at £1800, I don't think that it feels or looks special at all and I certainly wouldn't factory order it.

One other thing that I have noticed in the three weeks of ownership is that the heated seats seem to take ages to warm up, I think it's partly due to the cold side bolsters against your legs, I have never noticed this on any other heated seats I've had in the past.
