Title: GTI Mark 6 Owners
Post by: Captain Sensible on 15 January 2010, 15:59
Some of us can only dream what its like to drive the GTI down a twisty B-road and over take on a A road.
Can you tell us.

Sorry.. I can't help you..

In the 2 and a half weeks since I've had my car the roads have been covered in snow and ice meaning that I've only done about 200 miles since getting it home and about 40mph top speed!

I'm hoping that the roads may clear over the weekend!

I haven't used mine for so long I can't remember.

Anyway, it depends on what you're used to. If you've only owned old Diesel Fords then it's a bit quicker. If you're used to Scooby WRXs it's not as fulfilling but probably rides a bit better. If you have a mk5 GTI, it's about the same!!!

Addictive exhaust noise
Solid
Quiet
Refined
Easy to drive fast, very rewarding
Seats are superb

But :
Could be quicker, alot quicker
FWD traction is a problem

I've had some very nice cars in the past. But I loved the GTI (on my first one, second one on order now).
It came alive when we went on our hols to Wales last year (my first hol in Wales), as we now have a little one.
When we went the schools had gone back and we drove down mid day so the roads were empty (I was shocked at how empty they were!).
Drive was all B  roads, and got to say wow!!!! The car came alive, it really felt different once got onto the B roads, put a massive smile on my face and I thought oh yes what a cracking car. Massive buzz and a car full of holiday stuff. I love hatch backs and this is 100% the best. When the Mk6 came out and saw the new interior thought, ah yes very nice. The drive felt just like the Mk5, but a little more base sound from the engine (ok it's fake but sounded great). When I got back I started to call about for discounts \ deals and then slapped a deposit down!

Off to cornwall this year, looking forward again to the B roads.
One interesting point was taking it to the lakes. Some very cool roads, thought it would take the fun out of it as you knew it would blast up with zero effort, even ultra sharp 1 in 3 climbs on the more demanding passes, but no I even spent the day going arround my fav passes.

Totally recomend taking your golf to south Wales of peak. It's a total 100% blast on the B roads!!

Personally, it is a lot faster going down an A or B road in mine than a MKVI

*goes and hides behind my MKVI proof settee*

Feels a MkI v's MkII v's Tugboat v's Tank v's MkV v's MkVI thread coming on :lipsrsealed:

I just love GTIs, all of them.

Apart from the mk3 GTI which was a mistake. (Hope I'm safe posting this in the mk6 section..)

It's about time we had a bit of freindly rivalry banter between the two sections - MKIV's and MKV's did it for a while when the MKV first came out, but it didn't last long and we all knew what the outcome would be

Yeah, the MkVI

You can't simply put that without any true justification

Stock MKV GTI v's Stock MKVI GTI the tale of the tape and reviews says 10% better, but what about ED30 MKV GTI - it cost about the same as a MKVI GTI, but is more powerful and more tuneable!

Not as clearcut as you think

Ah well, yes. The ED30 is a (almost) limited edition model though, of which there is no equivalent MkVI. A possible spiritual successor might be the Scirocco R? Perhaps if the economy recovers in time one day they'll build a run-out special GTI with the Scirocco R engine, then the playing field will be level.

Until then the Ed30 is the better performer, if lacking a little in sophistication and style

Thanks for the replies you cant beat reading owners views.
I had a mark 2 GTI I bought as a demonstrator which for me has been the best drivers car. Since then I have had different Golfs and Passat , Audi A3 ? currently I went piratical with an Outlander. None of these cars could touch the mark 2 GTI for driving pleasure including the Audi A3.
It took me a bit of convincing the wife to change down to a smaller car after the outlander but she eventually came round. So after driving diesels for the past 15 years I am truly excited. The fact I live in a village surrounded by A and B roads is going to make the experience of owning a GTI truly enjoyable.
I would love to make the effort and turn up to one of these GTI meetings in the future.

Agan thaks to all the replies

The Golf R has the same engine as the Edition 30 and is heavier and has 4WD drivetrain losses to cope with.

Do you think VW would let me hook my Performance box to the R when I test drive it next week?

hmmm its going to be a close one to call... but with an extra 40bhp on the ed30 and roughly the same engine weight, and extra traction i would guess the R pips it just!

Not against yours obviously

You are right, but I am talking about stock v stock here.

My Edition 30 when stock did 5.59 seconds to 60 and 14.2 to 100mph, so it would take a DSG Golf R to match it to 60. I haven't seen any figures for 0-100mph for the Golf R yet.

On the twisties in the dry or wet I'd edge towards the R though.

You can't simply put that without any true justification

I do not want to start a whole new topic so I adress MK VI owners in this one...

I do not like much crome in an interior and the MK VI has lots of it...

Now is it possible to change the silver strips on the doors and dash for say carbon or simular...

Anyone any experience..
