All of the followers had signs of wearing. 3 where pitted and one had completely worn through :lipsrsealed:
It was the same story for the camshaft

The last two shows the lobe which had worn through the follower. Its almost completely round
Symptoms where clicking sound after 2k rpm, white smoke on start up, excessive black smoke when driving and power surging. You could also hear the turbo stuttering
Anyone with a PD150 or remapped 130 its worth taking the cam cover off and checking for any wearing to the camshaft and followers. It is an expensive job
ps sorry for the sh!t pics was taken with a camera phone
-
Ouch!!
your description on the phone earlier painted a grim picture and those pics really hit home!!
-
Sorry to hear about this Steve. I assume your all fixed up now with a dent in your wallet??
-
think i would be taking the sump off to clean any swarf/remains out !
-
That's not pretty...
It looks similar to pretty much every cam and follower I had in my Escort lol
-
Got it back tonight Scott  Drives nice again. and yes a big dent but not as much as I feared
think i would be taking the sump off to clean any swarf/remains out !
would be a good idea but wont have the time for a week or so. they used a engine flush and some engine cleaner and the oil was changed about 2 weeks ago
-
what did it cost if you dont mind me asking ?
-
Wow that looks bad, whats your mileage like.
-
Total cost was £850 but I never changed the cam belt as that was only changed 10k ago. parts changed was camshaft, cam followers, shell bearing, oil, oil filter. 6.5 hours labour.
mileage is 115k
-
ouch!! sorry to hear and see about your chocolate cam probs there steve thats some pretty severe damage there i haven't seen cams and followers that bad for a long while but im glad your sorted out now and its repaired :afro: i would recommend changing your oil and filter after 2/3k even if its only recently done just to make sure cant do any harm anyway
-
will be doing it again soon.
it got changed 2 weeks ago then again today
just hope nothing else goes wrong any time soon........... :lipsrsealed:
-
These cams are an epic fail from VW

thats like most car manufacturers steve i'm afraid and its not widely issued that there is/could be a potential problem with certain components etc looks bad for the company if there is to much of a concern although i would of thought vw would use well known suppliers etc for their parts
-
glad ya sorted steve, and the dent in the wallet aint as bad as eearlier feared. :lipsrsealed:
is now the time to tell them you thought about selling it
-
MPI Minis form 96 to 2000 suffered the same problem. Pulled the cam out of the wifes mini when doing a rebuild and found the last 3 lobes had worn flat on the top. I rang round Piper etc to see if they had any standard cams floating about to re profile that I could buy and they said they chuck em as they're that bad. Got a billet one in the end.

sorry if this has been brought up before but iam thinking of buying a pd150, is the "chocolate cam" a problem due to remapping or does it happen in standard form?
is there a uprated cam you can buy? (stronger)
-
Happens in standard form as well :(

lots of theories on this but apparently there was a poor batch of cams fitted to the engines
Not sure if they were later revised along with the followers or the quality returned to normal :undecided:
-
not as bad as Nick R-Tech feared which is good, mega cash to be sorted though. you still gona sell it?

He's going to keep it now
Can't afford to change it lol
-
Is it only the 150's that had the problem or do 130's suffer as well.
-

You only hear about the 150's suffering from this although the camshaft is exactly the same in the 130 :lipsrsealed:
-
i have a cam and 8 followers that look just like this in my garage from our old golf  infact everyone i know with a 150pd has a these
-
what about the 115's? :lipsrsealed: they the same?

there are a few 130's which have suffered :lipsrsealed:
I think they only revised the followers. apparently the followers are a weaker metal than the cam which causes them to wear which then causes the cam to wear
It drives nice now  run it in for a week or so then see what she really drives like
-
Glad shes all sorted bud :afro:
More VW quality huh :lipsrsealed:
Same for the water pumps "The water pump is not a part that needs changing" :lipsrsealed:

Well I just had the dreaded cam shaft problem car was running like a bag of sh!t and missing and all sorts however I used aw engineering to source the camshaft shell bearings and 8 followers all of which are made from the new hardened steel this kit was delivered for £260.00 I then got a vw technician to fix it on the side for £150 that included new pd oil and oil filter so all in all a complete bargain £400 the car drives like new now no dodgy sounds rattles he also tidied the engine up
-
Jeez this sure is an expensive problem to have, Nad that is a damn good price bro.
Anyone on here had this problem on the PD130?
My car has been remapped on a 130 now i'm sort of sh!tting my pants, what are the syptoms of this problem?
-
