Post by: Steve_PD on 14 January 2010, 21:14

All of the followers had signs of wearing. 3 where pitted and one had completely worn through :lipsrsealed:

It was the same story for the camshaft

The last two shows the lobe which had worn through the follower. Its almost completely round

Symptoms where clicking sound after 2k rpm, white smoke on start up, excessive black smoke when driving and power surging. You could also hear the turbo stuttering

Anyone with a PD150 or remapped 130 its worth taking the cam cover off and checking for any wearing to the camshaft and followers. It is an expensive job

ps sorry for the sh!t pics was taken with a camera phone

Got it back tonight Scott   Drives nice again. and yes a big dent but not as much as I feared

think i would be taking the sump off to clean any swarf/remains out !

would be a good idea but wont have the time for a week or so. they used a engine flush and some engine cleaner and the oil was changed about 2 weeks ago

Title: Re: Anyone fancy a chocolate cam
Post by: Steve_PD on 14 January 2010, 21:34
Total cost was £850 but I never changed the cam belt as that was only changed 10k ago. parts changed was camshaft, cam followers, shell bearing, oil, oil filter. 6.5 hours labour.
mileage is 115k

thats like most car manufacturers steve i'm afraid and its not widely issued that there is/could be a potential problem with certain components etc looks bad for the company if there is to much of a concern although i would of thought vw would use well known suppliers etc for their parts

MPI Minis form 96 to 2000 suffered the same problem. Pulled the cam out of the wifes mini when doing a rebuild and found the last 3 lobes had worn flat on the top. I rang round Piper etc to see if they had any standard cams floating about to re profile that I could buy and they said they chuck em as they're that bad. Got a billet one in the end.

sorry if this has been brought up before but iam thinking of buying a pd150, is the "chocolate cam" a problem due to remapping or does it happen in standard form?

is there a uprated cam you can buy? (stronger)

Happens in standard form as well :(

lots of theories on this but apparently there was a poor batch of cams fitted to the engines

Not sure if they were later revised along with the followers or the quality returned to normal  :undecided:

Is it only the 150's that had the problem or do 130's suffer as well.

You only hear about the 150's suffering from this although the camshaft is exactly the same in the 130  :lipsrsealed:

there are a few 130's which have suffered :lipsrsealed:
I think they only revised the followers. apparently the followers are a weaker metal than the cam which causes them to wear which then causes the cam to wear

It drives nice now  run it in for a week or so then see what she really drives like

Well I just had the dreaded cam shaft problem car was running like a bag of sh!t and missing and all sorts however I used aw engineering to source the camshaft shell bearings  and 8 followers all of which are made from the new hardened steel this kit was delivered for £260.00 I then got a vw technician to fix it on the side for £150 that included new pd oil and oil filter so all in all a complete bargain £400 the car drives like new now no dodgy sounds rattles he also tidied the engine up
