Hey all,
Just got the bleeding thing less than a week ago and already having problems
It's a 2000 X reg Galaxy using a 1.9TDI PD, so still relevant
Driving into work today the first 15 miles were fine, stuck in a lot of traffic but that's nawt unusual.
I tried over taking a cyclist but couldn't! I was in 2nd doing 10/15mph and floored it but nothing happened, then the glow plug light came on so I pulled over and turned the car off.
Turned it over to key pos 2 and the GP light went out after a second and started her up, she drove for a few hundred yards and done the same again... at this point in holding up traffic on a busy road in the middle of Oxford :embarassed: So I tried again and it works again for a few hundred yards.... It happened again when at a point where I wouldn't block traffic so I decided to call my breakdown cover I have with my insurance, they couldn't find my details on their system (possibly because I'm a new customer) and couldn't confirm my address because their postcode system (GreenFlag) doesn't yet have my postcode... comon' it's been a year since the place was built!
They said call insurance directly and have them confirm my address with them, so I call them and their systems are DOWN
So after all that f@cking about I still couldn't get recovered, I tried again and she worked! I was only 2 miles down the road from my work so I drove there where she is now parked up.
So when this happens...
1.) No Acceleration.
2.) GP light comes on after a few seconds of this and starts flashing.
3.) Rev counter is just above 1k when this happens.
4.) The car will pull itself along as if you have released the clutch and applying no acceleration.
5.) Plenty of fuel.
Any ideas where to start looking? I don't have a fault code reader or cable for vag-com yet.
-
Get yourself a fault reader from eBay Jay.
Have you tried unplugging the MAF sensor and tried her then?
-
I'll give that a go in a bit. Just been back out and it did the same thing first time I started it, shut it down, started again and it was revving freely for a few minutes, shut it down again, and it did the same thing after a few revs
Someone else mentioned wastegate or throttle potentiometer (although they did not have the whole story), how likely are these?
-
Don't know haven't got a clue.
Check the MAF first mate, it's plug by the airbox and see how you get on!
-
Looks like TC (Diamond Hell) might have been right about the throttle potentiometer.

Fingers crossed it sorts it.
-
Need log in to view that
-
TPS - throttle position sensor - also known as the accelerator pedal position sensor.
Its a fly by wire system and when the dual track potentiometer attached to the accelerator pedal plays up, this is what happens. A new one costs around £60-£80 IIRC. Pretty easy to change.
Do a search for more info - people have stripped the sensor down and cleaned out the fluff and restored it to working condition.
-
you did put diesel in it yes ?
-
you did put diesel in it yes ?
It sounds like someone has put petrol in it.
Does it smoke at all?
-
Mr DH is indeed on the right lines

Yes

Only put Diesel in it and only normal steam/condensation when first starting it up.
Recovery come out and turned the car on, pressed the accelerator it did the same and then came...
:lipsrsealed:
Bloke: "Sir, it does look like the throttle isn't talking to the ECU."
Me: "Can we try cleaning it to see if that sorts it?"
Bloke "No"
Me "OK, can you tow me in that ickle van?"
Bloke "No"
Me "So how we going to get me home/to a garage?"
Bloke "I'll get a recovery truck to pick you up, should be here in an hour but could be longer because of all the call outs."
Me "Good thing I wasn't on the side of the road then Like I was this morning when I first called recovery"
Bloke "You called this morning?"
Me "Yes, at about 9:30am - it's now 4:30pm"
-
What a fooking T O S S E R
-
Sounds like my TPS might have got wet  Hopefully it just needs drying out and resealing to stop water getting back in!
Will keep you guys posted!
well tbf, it was an ickle van smaller than the BUS  But still, not even an attempt to fix it  So much for the Engine diagnostics and roadside repair on the side of his van

You really don't have much luck with cars Jay, although i guess you've already worked that one out!

Worked that one out  The more I spend on cars initially, the more they cost in the long run! £200 'banger' MK2 as my first car and it lasted the longest with not much attention! I should have just bought 10 £200 bangers
Working @ home tomorrow so I can try get it sorted in the morning.

overtaking a bicycle? something fishy there mate.. you sure you didn't go back to pick a fight with that stream and lost again?
-
Yup, I'm sure. I avoid 1cm deep puddles  It was just after a ped crossing (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=abingdon+road+oxford&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=13.574771,28.256836&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Abingdon+Rd,+Oxford,+United+Kingdom&ll=51.737994,-1.252305&spn=0.000434,0.000862&t=h&z=20&layer=c&cbll=51.738076,-1.252355&panoid=iudEjCUNn-VIPt2Qtc1Q_A&cbp=12,176.25,,0,26.84) and the cyclist was all over the road... he needs cycling lessons

I just LOL'd at work - LOUD one at that , just had to explain Jays paddling exploits
-
This car's air intake is like 3 foot up so wouldn't have been a problem in that situation :smug:
It was not wet when I took it out (well a bit of condensation build up but the whole car suffers that) and cleaned off all the dust and muck on the TPS/Peddle sensor, just going down to clean the plug inside the car.
The REALLY annoying thing is when the guy came to recover me it only bloody worked! so I was able to reverse and get on the trailer OK, same as when we got back to mine
Putting it all back together in a few mins and will take her for a drive after some in Neutral testing.
-
TEXT me if you break down, shall be in wallyworld in a bit, will take the camera
-
Took it for a drive round WallyWorld and seemed OK so I tempted fate and drove a bit further, seems OK now after taking the peddle off and cleaning the contacts, opening it and cleaning the contacts inside too.
-
It only went and bloody well done it again on the way home, luckily I was 100 yards from my road so switched off and back on quickly, got to my road it done it again when slowing down, off/on quickly, turn in road and does it again!
Took the unit out again and wiped everything down with a dry tissue, opened it up to reveal the metal brushes and fiddled with them, put it back together and it worked fine on the 15mile round trip to my mums this evening.
Going to ring up the VW/Ford/Seat dealers around here tomorrow to see if they have the unit in stock.
-
Ordered a TPS from ebay... hopefully it cures the problem and it's nawt else!
-
f**king hell mate, I actually feel sorry for you, not to rub it in but you have the WORST luck I've ever known anyone to have with cars.
-
similar prob on my old 54 plate vaux combo van i sold my father in law, in the crap weather its just started ticking over at about 1500 rpm only with a couple of engine lights on.. i stripped the pedal unit and cleaned all the contacts etc then left the battery disconnected for a day and bingo all up and running..
hope its a simple fix.... all this dbw stuff is good in some ways , then in others is crap

I know this now  I think the auxiliary heater isn't working either so need to look into that, need to clear the vagcom codes first, and if that doesn't fix it then it might be the glow plug in the aux heater. (Aux heater being a seperate unit to warm the interior and coolant a bit quicker than the car would using only the engine's heat, not needed but good to have on those cold mornings  ) oh and a service inc belts etc...
-
Hallelujah! The TPS I ordered came today, I swapped it out this evening and the throttle feels SO much better, crisper and more responsive than the lazy old one. My old one is a revision A and this new one is a revision B.
