there is some sort of heat shield/sync underneath the driver seat. not 100% but i am told it's for deflecting heat away from the driver?
on the dual's on the way to work i hear this aweful grinding sound so pulled over. the front end bolt holding it in place has sheared and so i now have an under-car plough! i have temporarily held it up in place, but it needs fixing.
any advice on what to do, what it actually is?

No idea mate but i would get it up on a ramp & get it looked at.Could be just a broken bolt/screw ? :undecided:

Think that's probably the fuel cooler assembly. It's been well documented that quite a few Golfs have had their fixings shear and the unit just hangs off.
Probably best to get it investigated ASAP
See this picture, the cooler is at the top left side (front of car is at the top of the photo)

Norbreck was right, it was the fuel cooler assembly. the bolt hadn't sheared, the weld holding the thread to the car has cracked. got a new bolt through the floorplate (not through carpet though)
Very secure now. thx for help
