Im going to look at one tomo, and wondered what the truths are about them?
Parkers say they are ok on fuel, 51mpg average, and 9 secs to 60 (so better than my current Mk3 GTI!)
It has lots of mod cons and generally looks like a nice comfortable motor, abs, esp, cruise control, climate control etc.
Also has anyone had one remapped etc? The engine isnt listed (as far as i can see) on R-techs website.
Just want a general real world review of the car, im after something, safe, refined, comfortable, and economic, but not a ugly unreliable snail.

Thats the car im going to look at.

HI,
Just sold my MK5 GTTDi today (PD140) and bought the GTI TFSI as a replacement. As a guide, aim for 39-43mpg at most, I work in a service centre and regularly check cars trip computers, most see these figures, obviously depending on driving type.
Great cars in general, suffer from turbo faults a LOT (listen for a whistle that sounds like a faint police siren) and is a £500+ fix. I have done 5 in the last 2 months. Other than this they seem solid and reliable. Low power at low RPM is usually caused by faulty MAF sensor which causes a sudden surge in power when under load at 3000 rpm.
A remap is well worth it but avoid the cheap mobile guys, lots of rubbish maps floating about for these.
Hope this helps.

tbh, looks very nice, but a bit pricey imho....

I'd go for an A3 S Line for the same money, bit more spec, nicer interior & you may be able to find a Quattro. 170BHP is a nice car but make sure it's a genuine 170 & not something that's been chipped cos the book price is hugely different between the two.
There are a couple of c.£10K A3's on Pistonheads.
Two of the biggest problems on the 2.0 TDI are Air Flow Meter & Coolant Sensor, both very cheap DIY fix though.

That looks a nice car but rather too much money, especially for the mileage.
This is basically the same car, less miles and £2k cheaper.

Also, you could get a MK5 GTI for that sort of money - are you limited by insurance cost or fuel consumption? How about this?

Best of luck. Bottom line is that you're doing the right thing buying a MK5!

Whenever I see a Mk5 GT I always feel a bit sorry for the driver. So near yet so far.

The GT Sports look MUCH nicer:

i paid £6k for mine (non sport but now modified) with 72,000 miles and nothihng wrong with it. that was a year ago. i think that price for a non sport it a bit much to ask for.

Have been looking at the gt tdi for economy and also as inurance wouldn't be much change, if a bit less.
I wouldn't mind a gti but then I would be paying more insurance, more fuel, and then also finance on it (hence getting it from a dealer)

I've had both the A3 TDI sport and the GTTDI 140pd, both DSG. Both were great cars and once remapped the Golf was a lovely car. I had it for 18months and didn't have a single problem with it. It was even in Grey too
Did the 1/4 mile in just over 15.6 seconds and 0-60mph in 7.3 seconds, which wasn't bad for a car that WOULD do 50mpg on a run and an average of 41mpg over the 18 months.
The issue for me is that you could now get a GTI for sub £10k, which would be where my money would go unless you are a high mileage user.
My one issue would be that the Diesel definitely suits the DSG more than the manual as when pushing on you can keep it in the power/torque band much easier.

Awww... the missus recently turned down a company-car MKVI TDi DSG in favour of a 116d - I like the sound of that constant wall of torque!
BTW, nice new banner, Hurdy... Sorry OP!

Just been looking around at the other GT TDI's and it seems from 07 the GT TDI has the Sport front look like the gti?
Or at least the ones on the VW used site do.
Also i just spoke to my insurer (of whome i have 8months left with! on pay monthly) And they want an extra £700 to insure a mk5 gt tdi even though i have had other quotes that would be the same price as my current car!!!
Ridiculous!
