Title: Starting Woes
Post by: BelperJim on 12 January 2010, 13:56
Hi all,

Having problems starting my 16v.

Basically takes about 6 or 7 attempts to get her going.

The fuel pump primes constantly. I have tried replacing the fuel pump relay and have a replacement ECU and Ignition Unit both of which I have tried and still it primes constantly.

This has steadily got worse over the last couple of months.

Any help appreciated!

sounds liek you have a fault in the wiring loom, the pump relay is triggered by a signal from the ecu, if you look in the scuttle area you'll see a 2 pin plug with a red/yellow wire this is the fuel pump relay trigger from the ecu. its an earth signal, so id guess someone has run this wire to earth for some reason?

what number is on the relay, it should be 67, 80 or 167

I'm not 100% sure on the number but I know it's Blue. I can check the number when I get out of work. I'm going to hazard a guess at 67 from memory.

I bought a new relay to test the problem so I have kinda already ruled that one out.

I have a multimeter and time to spare and I really want to get the old girl back to her best.

What should I be looking for at the relay trigger?

Hi
What engine code is it ?

It's a standard 1991 16v. So I presume it's a KR without going out to look at the block.

lookin for anything dodgy looking wiring wise! if you disconnect the 2 pin plug the fuel pump shouldn't prime or run at all once ign switched on again, if it does the wiring is fudged between there and the fusebox.

if you earth the red/yel wire with the ignition on the pump should run, obv need to earth the fusebox side of the plug rather than ign controller side.

Okay Jonny I'll test it tonight and see how it goes.

Thanks for your help so far!

Is the two pin connector I'm after the one attached to the ecu? If so the pump still primes with this detached.

its in the scuttle area close to the ecu, 1 end of it goes to the ecu plug, the other runs to the fusebox.  if pump still runs with this disconnected then you've deffo had a bit of wire bodgery there! I'd take the main scuttle trim off and follow the loom as best you can, hopefully the problem will become obvious. look all over the engine loom for insulation tape, usually a clue that something has been repaired.  I say repaired, but I've yet to remove a bit of tape to find a nicely done fit, its usually covering something horrible

Okay that was the right plug. It definitely primes without it connected.

I will follow the wire and see what I can find. The back of the fusebox is a nightmare . Car is now on it's second aftermarket Cat 1 alarm so has had muchos fiddling.

Thanks for the help. I'll let you know how it goes!
