Title: mrk 3 gti problem

my mates got a mk3 gti it has 170000 on the clock the car drives but some times it cuts out and will not start again for a long time.. he has asked me to see if any body mite know whats wrong with it... i dont ave a clue as dont know much bout golfs...

to be honest aint got a clue about the relays (think its just pulling the fuel and ecu/power relay out and plugging new1 in. but the throttle body cleaning: you take the air filter box of take the plastic intake off and then with the car turned off, spray carb cleaner onto the throttle body (butterfly flap) and use a tooth brush to clean it, then start car and hold the revs gently above 1.5k and then get a mate to spray inside, you could take the throttle body off like i did but then i had to get the idle valve controller reset and that cost £30 roughly. also when your revving your car and someone sprays in the throttle body the car will suffer and will try to cut out but just try to keep the revs steady.

car wont try and start if its the crank position sensor, same as the other mk3 problem up at the mo (poorly mk3) if it wont start give the cable a little wiggle to the sensor while its cranking, if it starts or trys its that.  I needs replacing, i tried rebuilding one once and it only lasted 7 months

I agree also. lt sounds like the problem is the crank speed sensor. I had similar problem and changed it. Now the car never cuts out, whether warm or cold.
I believe this sensor is only found on some 8v gti's and l think on only the AGG engine coded ones. Please check your engine code and find out if this sensor exists on your car.

Mine did this and it turned out to be the crank shaft sensor which is hidden behind the dizzy, you have to take the front engine mount off to get to it.

Does it run then when hot it wont start for a while if so I bet it's the crank shaft sensor £40 GSF.

What is the engine code, should be on the logbook (v5) ?
If the engine code is AGG then it looks like it could be the crank position sensor as others have suggested on this forum.
Any more details of the problem ?
