Evening all.
Just really looking for a quick clarification really, one of the things i want to do to the 16v this winter is change over to a full g60 trim kit,so arches, side strips and sill covers,it currently has the pre 90 spec kit,so the smaller arches that dont go to the bottom of the splitter and the bigger side strips and also does not have the sill covers at present, will it just be a case of removing the arches and replacing with the g60 ones and will the rubbing strips fit the car,ie are the clips the same size as the ones on the bigger strips that i currently have? i just dont really want to pull it all off then have a problem,(the car does have big bumpers)
Any help would be appriciated.

Why?
-
If you can find a full G60 trim kit good luck, even if you can they are not cheap. I have to agree with DH on this and ask why, it is not that much different to what you have now.
SPend the money on something nice for the misses!

Isnt g60 kit a 90 spec kit with slightly wider arches?
A mate of mine changed to 90 spec kit and because the side strips are smaller there was an outline in the paint where the big ones used to be.

I believe so, the front arches are wider I think. If you have wide rims then it does look good.
-
I have 8" rims and want to do it as the car is mainly a show car and a bit of fun in the summer,I just like the look of the 90 spec/g60 kit more than the pre 90 kit,in my opinion the car just looks more distinguished,I do already have the arches and the side strips just need to find the sill covers
-
Ah fair enough. Looks good when it's done right.
-
I might be being a proper retard but.. whats the difference between the pre 90 and the 90 + spec?
Thought 90 spec was when they introduced the big bumper style kit? Your car has the big bumper style stuff on it hasnt it? But you say its pre-90 spec style rather than the later spec?

^^
Fat side trims, no skirt extensions on a pre 90, along with various technical changes.
you can fit big bumpers on a pre 90 though, it just looks a bit odd with the fat trims (a bit like my mk2 at the moment then :lipsrsealed:)
-
I'm still a bit confused dude, pre-90 is the small bumper spec yeah?
the side strips on mine are really chunky but mines a 90
-
I converted my trim from pre-90 to 90-spec last year... Didn't come across any major problems, except where the side-skirts clip in under the lip of the sill.
Due to the previous absence of side-skirts, there was nothing to stop previous owners from jacking the car up at the wrong points on the sill, meaning that the lip was, in places, slightly bent where it shouldn't be.
Just use your common sense, and make sure the skirts are attached solidly by whatever means you choose!

Judging by your photo yours are the thin side strips (theyll have a gti badgle on them) the chunky ones are much thicker.

best prices ive seen the G60 arches alone go for was £190.00 through edition, in TIDY condition. seen a new set on ebay go for £260 a few months ago!

Thanx mate, that answers my question,do you have an outline where the fat side strips used to be (bearing in mind my golf is white and the trims have been on there for 20 years)
-
There's a MASSIVE outline where my rubbing strips used to be.
If it's a 'show car' (bwahahahaha) then you're going to be into a respray down the length of both sides for this.

that was/is my main worry,by show car I mean a car I go to shows in in the summer (it's not used in winter at all) unfortunatly even tho I'd love to build a proper show car funds don't allow it guess u have to live within ya means so it's not maybe what U would call a show car but it's a show car to me.
-
Depends really, my mates small bumper 8v was pristine under the strips once we took them off, just needed a clean. If the car has had paint before then look closely, often the strips are left on the car which would result in a nasty line where they used to be.
Oh and apart from the obvious, you need the sill fitting kit. this comes with a load of clips and fixings necessary to attach it all to the car. I believe GSF sell these kits?
-
Thanks rubjonny,helpfull as always!
-
90 spec is a bit of a confusing term imho, as the wiring loom changes and washer bottle etc have all been seen on samll bumper cars too !

The sill trims for a G60 kit are the same as a 90 spec. Think i paid £35 a side for new ones from VW.

How long ago was that mate and did they come with the fixings?
-
Was about 3 months ago and all the fixing are extra.
-
rubbing strips are the same too, its just arches that differ. you can still get all the arches new except one of the rear ones from VW/BBT
-
Yeh I did get the arches from bbt rubjonny but I had to get 60 fronts and 90spec rears because one of the g60 rears (I think osr) is no longer available.
