Title: help me please engine trouble ?????????????
Post by: djdeekers on 11 January 2010, 18:02
can anyone help me please???????????????

i bought a golf a few weeks ago 1.8 gti 20v - and the other day when i was driving to work the car just stopped dead - its turning over but wont start, - the timiing belt and all is still in place, but my mechanic says there is a timing chain on the golfs as well and that, and he thinks it may have came off the tensioner - if this is the case, would there be valves and all bent? - would it be better to go on down and take the whole head off and see - or maybe replace the tenisoner and fire it up first to see if it goes ok

what should i do ?

any help much appreciated

I thought it was only the VR's that had a chain? Post this in the mk4 section mate and I bet you will get a quick response

Welcome to the site.

Your car has a cam belt and not a chain.

think he's talking about the chain between the two cams.. but if that had snapped while you were driving you'd have heard a hell of a racket! Get someone to scan the car for fault codes. A failed crank position sender (vw call it the impulse sender - a fault code reader may refer to it as an engine speed sensor) can cause this and won't always put the engine management light on.

I'd go with Tophers advice and get it checked for fault codes first before going out buying parts. And as he says, if this chain had gone wappy then it would of made a right racket, does the engine sound healthy enough when its turning on the starter?
