my mate has broke his gearbox in his 8v gti and i have a 16v one in the garage, will it work in a 8v? or are they different
-
Yes it'll work but I think the clutches are different. Someone will be along shortly who will advise you on the clutch thing.

Arent the gears taller in the valver boxes?
-
yeah just the clutch needs swapping, the input shaft is smaller on 8v
bonus is you can use the bigger pressure plate from the valver
i believe the flywheels are the same
aren't the boxes the same except 5th, which is slightly longer on the 8v?
-
As above 5th is different I believe.

pressure plate is same size in 16v, though some say it is stronger. depends on the kit you get tho, sachs 8v and 16v kit has the same part # on the pressure plate.
early 8v ACD code box and 16v 2Y box ratios are identical except 5th is taller on 8v, so less revs on motorway. later 8v AUG code box is same as the ACD but 2nd is taller.
last of all the 2y box has a larger input shaft than the 8v, so to fit you need to change the clutch friction disc at very least. madness not to put an entire clutch on there anyway while box off so no big deal.
Best to physically check the box codes on them though, as theres no tellign that the boxes are the originals
