Hi everyone im new to this site i have just bought myself a very tidy mk3 golf gti 8v in black after selling my mk3 ibiza cupra. it already has a nice set of 17s on it but i felt it was siting to high. Ive ordered a set of spring to lower the front 40mm and the rear 35mm.
Ive been searching for a good hour looking at different mk3s but i havent seen one lowered like this they have ether just been 40mm or slamed on coilovers.
im lowering the car next sat so i was wondering if it was possible if anyone could post a picture of there car lowered like this on 17 thannks in advance mike.
-
if youve looked at enough pictures you will have seen that a mk3 lowerd 35/40mm on 17's will still look like a 4x4 and also just buying springs will mean even worse handling on top of a already poor handling car.
Welcome btw
-
i ve looked at plenty of pictures but none lowered 35 rear 40 front like i stated! i dont want it slammed as ive been there with other cars i would just like some indication on what it would like.
thanks anyway..

welcome to the forum

thanks

hiya mikey, by any chance are you from the crewe area?? its just ive seen a slammed silver ibiza about with a private plate very similar to ur user name??
-
hi yeh im from nantwich and that would of been my ibiza
-
Welcome to the site.
17"s look big, a 40mm drop will hardly show.
-
looked nice, seen it many a time on the bypass between the peacock and sainsburys :) i had a black 3dr mk2 gti but just bought a black 5dr mk 3 gti. nice to have some local gti owners :)

Thanks it was my pride and joy had to sell up to get a house. i live just near sainsburys so always down that bypass.

Buy a set of coilovers and drop it the amount you want then if you dont like it you can change it to suit your needs? Thats what i would do!
-
yeh i know but money is tight trying to buy a house.

Fitting just springs is pointless to honest, you will end up replacing the shocks as they will fail with working under shorter travel.
-
yeh very true but on most of the uprated shocks if you buy the cheap ones they last just as long, ive found that out in the past. I know that i could get hottuning coilover etc.. but i havent, ive just bought the springs for now as im short of cash to throw at a car. I just wanted a quick fix to i high car if you know what i mean. If i had the money the car would be slammed and on some nice bbs splits, but im not gonna slam it on these wheels that came with the car because i would look like a little boy racer, i want it to be abit more sutble.
-
angle grinder ftw
-
Boring answer - but I ran on 205/40 R17s for a while - only a slight improvement in handling and the tyre wear was rapidly increased. The wheels were also significantly heavier than stock, even if they were alloys, and therefore affected the unsprung weight and compromised the shocks and springs - in other words, I did not know better than VW who spent millions on R&D so I swappped back to stock asap.

I'm with Mikey on this one.

-40mm G-max all round on 17's
Is this the kind of thing you were after?? Not quite 40/35mm but near enough
I think you'll agree it doesn't look like a Landcruiser and yet still really comfy
-
That mint andy, id be happy very with that, im sure 5mm wont make much diffrerce to the back and i quite like the front lower than back on cars, thanks very much thats what i was after. tidy looking car awel.
-
hi, well today i lowered the golf 40mm front and 35 rear and im very pleased with the results i think it looks awesome! just what i was after.
what you think

Front looks smart but rear still sticking up in my view.

+1 rear looks high
-
yeh it does but its better than being to low on the rear and looking chav i like a bit of nose diving anyway!!
-
it sat even over the arches the bumpers make it look lower at the front

looks all wrong tbh :undecided:

Looks Fine fella, i would love to have a mega low car dropped to 100mm on coilovers, but what allot of people here don't understand is that we cant due to using our cars every day, and having families.
If it was a show car yes then great, but ive lowered enough cars in the past to know big wheels+springs=choppy ride.
So just remember be nice they may be a reason why its not scraping the floor, but its sure not a 4x4 looks fine.

very true mate thanks.
shepgti get a grip it hardly looks all wrong maybe not your taste but if everyone modding to your taste the world would be a boring place because everything would be the same.
-
when did you fit them as they will settle over the next few weeks (I carry something heavy in the boot to speed this up )
and after driving my old gti at various heights a 40mm drop is sensible
-
yeh true i have just lowered it and parked it on the front of my house where the picture is taken, not driven it anywhere yet ive gotta wait for the log book so i can swap my private plate from other car to this and get insurance.
-

haha in my opinon it doesnt look good, but then the world would be a boring place if we didnt have our own opinons :smug:
and as for not dropping it more i personally had mine dropped over 80mm and used it daily regularly with 4 people in with no issues. mainly through not using wheels from a tractor
-
I ran 17"s and had mine a lot lower than yours, drive fine, went even lower when I switched back to 15"s, if your happy with it thats all that matters at the end of the day.
-
as above, too high for me, but its not my car
if your happy then its all good
-
when mine was 60mm I had to be careful carrying too much shopping and at 75mm I left my mark on most of the local speed humps (including sparks going to my local dub meet!) but i was running 15's
when you get your plates fitted...it's time to hit the local maccy d's car park and drive some local " "women" around (the weight will make the bedding in time days rather than weeks)
