Title: A Lease GTI....Tuning it..
Post by: ErikGTI on 08 January 2010, 18:21
I reckon such a topic can be usefull to our GTI - leasing addicts.

Here is my (and probably in some cases) your situation..

I want to Tune (remap) my GTI.....for another 40-50 BHP.....software only  (DOB= Diagnosis On Board)

If I do it after I receive my car with a state-of-the-art Tuning Company JD-Engineering they charge me 900 euro (sorry you are still in the pound era  :lipsrsealed:)...without letting the lease company know.

BUT BY DOING SO...!!!!...... the factory guarantee is immediately invalid so (for me ) worst case scenario is, if things go wrong with your engine you can be hold responsible for a limited amount of approx. 5500 euro... :lipsrsealed:.

If you do it by the book...my dealer charges 1400 euro and has the task to inform the lease company who charges you monthly an extra amount
(brakes-tires-fuel)..I do not know how much yet....Although Fuel consumption becomes even less

WHO HAS EXPERIENCE...and what do the charge you.........

Be VERY careful doing this

there was a chap on seatcupra.net who modded his brand spanking new Cupra R, leasing company found out, took the car off him AND made him pay the full amount outstanding on the lease!!

Result - about 14K out of pocket and NO CAR!!

Get a bluefin for ( approx ) €550 and map it yourself. When it goes for servicing, load the standard map back on. When you leave the dealers, reload to modified map.

Problem solved

Not really, as VW with the right software can see how many times the ECU has been written to. I doubt very much that they would investigate it at a typical service or routine warranty work but if it is something serious they might just try and wriggle their way out it.

I'm pretty sure the bluefin unit gets around the flash counter these days so the dealer software reports zero re-writes. I'm not sure if it resets it every time or bypasses it though. If it resets it then you could run into trouble when there is a dealer update and the next time you go back it reads zero rewrites again!

One thing it can't get around is the map file checksum though. Dealers don't have the tools to check it but in the case of an insurance claim assessors sometimes employ ECU specialists to look in to that.. if your original file isn't loaded on the car when they do say byebye to your payout.

a copper... :..ROFLMAO.....

Us racemonsters do have humor....

I think I will let go....I am afraid asking a price to the lease company...I will be asking them to please rip me off....

No my mails are more or less a warning to GTI car owners/leasers since the guarantee is no longer valid after tuning it (unless VW does it) ..I honestly did not have the faintest idea about that, but now am glad that I have been warned...  !!!

I think I will settle for the standard less horsepower  210 BHP....and after 4 years have another go for another 4 years of ultimate fun.....beating overall all my other cars I had in the past (Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Alfa Romeo)

The photo in the avatar is meant a bit humurous/cynical.......a copper with a loud mouth challenging my hero......
(as a matter of fact Stig received that ticket on the photo I believe in Amsterdam...makes me even feel ashamed as a dutchman towards Top Gear......)

At last some figures...

The lease company phoned today...

In short 1400 euro tuning....and 30 euro pro month more fuel cost and a factor for tires....adds up to 60 euro per month for the coming 48 months... :lipsrsealed:.

They strongly advise NOT to do it....but hey...that is for me to decide...

First I am finding out what ABT does for this amount......

Hi Erik,
just joined and read the story.  Did you go the ABT way?  In September I took delivery of a VW dealer supplied car here in NL and the ABT remap for Mk6 was not yet available so they suggested an O.CT remap instead.  Lease company was OK (EUR1400 cost ) and 12000km later its been a lot of fun... :smug:

I have decided not to bother with any tuning.
I will run the car in first for about 6-9 months and then re-evaluate the situation.
Might just have a new air filter to start with.
