My car is making funny noise when its cold comming from the left hanside of the engine. Once its warm it goes away and no problems driving wise? Any support guys? Thanks steve
-
Do you mean the left hand side of the engine looking at the car from the front on?
I had the chirping noise coming from the cambelt "area" of the engine. It only did it when cold and went away when the engine was warm.
VW had the car and said it could either be the cambelt tensioner or water pump. They changed the water pump, tensioner and cam belt all under warrenty and the car has been fine since.

Yes thats sounds about right, The car has only done 11,000 on a 58 plate. Is it a big job? I have ordred a MK6 gti and should get by march build week 9.
The question is shall I leave until then or is it urgent and needs to be seen ASAP? The dealer will be PX for new MK6 . What will happen if its not sorted? Thanks Steve
-
All the work was done in a day. But the dealer had to order the parts in.
I couldn't tell you if its an urgent job though and I don't know if there are any long term effects if the job is not done. But it sound soo much better now that the work has been done..
-
Just got back from the dealers, and they said its hose that needs replacing rubbing on the fan?? Car is booked in for next week ? Lets just see what comes out it when its replaced? TBH I didnt belive them but what can you do thanks Steve
-
^^^^ Cam belt tensioner is the problem.
Pipe rubbing is a loud of twoddle and they need to work on their Diagnosis better
New Cam belt required aswell. Half day job under warranty.
Several People have had this, couple of been fed with bad diagnosis and then finally admit that cam belt tensioner is the problem.
If they just move your Pipe, you will be back the next cold start with same issue.
-
Hi phil , thanks for that , i do belive you but , I did challenge them on it quite strongly on this, but they said that its a high pressure hose causing the problem?? I thought Bull **** no its not but we shall wait and see?? I will Name & shame them on here if your correct ?? I will also cancel my order for the MK6 GTI due in build week 9 we live in hope?? I have had to take a day off work today for this becuse of being in there 2 hrs waiting for them to take a look. If they get it wrong i will be really Pi**** off :angry:thanks Steve
-
ok steve, let us know how it goes wont you.

i was there this morning at dovercourt picking up a new maf sensor and saw 2 other silver ed30's so one was must have been yours
best colour
i purchased my car there so used them for servicing - not been overly impressed but took out the service plan so might as well get my money's worth - still use jkm for inbertween servicing though
-
have to say dovercourt sales men are great and chris who was there up until last year help us with quite a few bit but now he has gone we dont get the same service and i feel the service dept dont really have that extra care any more.
we moved west and now use high wycombe (city gate) and they are just as bad, ie when you get a tech they dont listen to what you know to be the problem but presume something else.
I went there last year with my cold start problem after being told by a tech that phil and i met called Gary, who said straight away its deffo the cam belt, get it seen soon or it could be very expensive. So i went down there and got a tech to look, he said its the air con! so obviously i replied with my armory and let them take the car in. Was told the air con will be fixed tomorrow, so i said what about the cam.
Thats fine they say! so 2 days later i get a call (and BTW im paying £10 a day for the luxury of driving one of their Polo's!) we have noticed a problem with the cam belt and it needs to be replaced along with the tensioner and water pump. I couldnt believe it a car at 25k and they are telling me it wont need replacing till 60k! So i concur! Steve the fact your getting rid its not so important but this problem could be dangerous in damaging pistons etc very prematurely in these cars, and i would be vigilant with the MK6 GTI and R and the Rocco R too...

Hi James , yes mine was the 58 plate , I have to say the sales department have been very good to me over the years, but the service side of things are a nightmare!! I just dont rate the service team there at all , 6 months ago thy dented my car the cost £700 damage in the wing which they fixed straight away whilst it was in for coil pack replacment. Now this wurling noise when the car is cold ?? I have just had it with them . hope you dont go through what i have been through thanks Steve
-
not been overly impressed with either the sales or servicing at dovercourt
when i first popped into enquire about a gti a couple of years ago the sales chap did not even give me the time of day, i was only 24 at the time.. but he did not even register my details, so when I went back the next weekend to buy the ed30 in the show room I certainly did not give him the business, I think I ended up with a chap called Robert Cheesman who was alright
servicing wise i'll trust them with a oil and filter change but thats about it as my cars modified so jkm in portsmouth do the rest for me.
why the mk6 gti steve? the power of the ed30 too much to handle

The Mk6 on the test drive was very nice , i love the refinemnet of it and i think its got a better engine!! The ED30 has been brilliant cant fulit it really, but i do change my car every 1 year to 18 months , so i thought why not get the mk6!! I'm not into moding. Robert Cheesman is still there he's a nice guy and has been ok. Steve

Hi Guy's , I just picked up my ed30 and its still making the same noise? I spoke to the tec , now he is saying its the fan belt and started spraying WD40 on it at that point there I just lost it with him!! Now the the service manger is involved and looking to cancel the mk6 now, i am so F***** off with Dovercourt service department. I am at a loss now really frustrated dont know what to do??
-
Tell them to replace cambelt and Tensioner as they should of done in the first place.
You cant say i didnt warn you. Hopeless some of these VW tech's.
Have you actually told them about the cam belt tensioner being the problem??, as lots of people have had this problem cured 1st time around.
-

Hi Phil , Belive me I have told them this morning, I nearly ended up punching this Tec, he was useless so now the service manger as taken over. He has asked me to deal with him on Monday got the car back and to monitor it over the weekend? If it still doing the same noise they are going to have another look at it on Monday? When this guy started spraying WD40 all over the fan belt , I asked him to stop doing it and his reply was I can do anything I want. Thats when I lost it with him!! Must be 20 times I have told them what the problem is but guy is having none of it!! More to be revealed ????
-
You have a email steve
-
honestly steve (philmc) you would not believe this garage they are an absolute joke
when I took my car their for dsg issues, I explained to them the problem and that I thought it was most probably a faulty mechatronic unit.
they called me to say car was ready to collect, went in and they explained to me - yes you need a mechatronic unit but we will not cover it as you are modified - that I could live with - but when they placed a bill in front of me for £200 just for the tech to look at my car and diagnose a faulty mech unit which I had already told them was the problem - i told them to f$£k off -refused to pay and just walked out in the end
to top it off ever since that trip to the dovercourt my ipod link cable doesn't work so god knows how they messed that up when looking at the gearbox.... i don't risk going back though
steve30 just complain to VW HQ about them, I have complained by phone and also written - I would also use it as leverage to get a discount of your mk6
good luck
-
James , so what was the outcome with mech unit? Did you have to pay for that? a lot money for DSG unit!!
yes they are an abosulte joke (the service depatment) I will check the car again in the morning on cold start? See what its like? Thanks James
-
the outcome not had it replaced yet, got the revo dsg software put on instead
it is a bit jurky in 1st and reverse - i can live with it as its not a daily driver for me just a evening / weekend toy
gonna have a dsg oil service done soon see if that improves things
still love the car though - is extremely quick - revo stage 2+ c350hp u might invalidate your warranty but well worth it :lipsrsealed:
-
Hi Phil & James , just checked the car this morning and its still making the same noise ? So I will dump the car on there forcourt on Monday and tell them to get it sorted once and for all throught the service manager if not my order will canceled on the same day so f8^$ them. SG smith here i come ?? I ve had it with them bunch of incompetent gunslingers!! Thanks Steve
-
Tell them to change what weve said to change before you have the car back.
Good luck steve
-
if you challenge them on the £10 charge, its optional. its so you don't have to pay the excess if you crash it. :-)
-

Hi Guys,
New on here.
Just thought I would add to this post - I had the same thing on my ED30 (had it for ages now, but got used to the sound). Found this post and thought I'd get it checked out with dealer (2,000 miles till end of Warranty )
Martins at Basingstoke, put it in there on Tuesday, left it with them overnight so they could hear it in full effect. Got it back yesterday, New Cambelt/Tensioner/Pulley - no Water Pump though, but it saved me nearly 500 quid (was gonna get it done at 80k :smug:) They never argued about it once, said it was the second ED30 they'd had with the issue.
Sounds sweet again now - ready for the next 58,000 miles!
