Hi all,
Jumped (well slid) into my car this morning, started her up and got a BONG! dont drive, coolant level low warning lamp on.
Simply topped up to about 75% of the two marks with some W12? coolant that I had Luckily.
Is it normal to lose some coolant/ fluid? should i be concerned about a leak somewhere?
-
Mine hasn't budged a mm since I got it. I think AlanD had some issues due to a minor leak somewhere and others have asked the same sort of question so I would say if its dropping regularly then yes there is an issue, its not just normal losses.

^ what he said.
Same here, mine hasn''t moved since I've had the car.
The cooling system is essentially sealed so shouldn't lose fluid. It is quite common for the system to 'find it's level' below the max mark on the expansion tank but if it consistently going down below the minimum then you have an issue.
Get it looked at asap.

I suffered with this on my first GTI, it turned out to be a leaking Flange.
There was a whole discussion when AlanD had the same problem, http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=93475.20

Thanks all for the information and the inuendo :-)
I'll keep my eye on it over the next few weeks, off skiing on saturday to the alps so I'll note the level and see if any movement on my return.
Meanwhile I'll see if I can get myself some "Flange" in France :-p

Mine did the same this morning. I thought it may be due tot he cold weather?

Had a similar thing with my old Audi A3 (57 plate 1.9TDI). Took it to the dealer expecting a leak and it was a faulty "EGR Cooler", luckily was under warranty at the time.

Sounds like a faulty coolant sensor, sometimes the cold causes all sorts of problems, mine did the same too!

As others have said, I had a leaking flange. This thread might come of use for part numbers etc - http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=100997.0
