Hi Guys,
Looking for some help on this one, not getting much feedback on the other board
I noticed thie other morning that when I turned on the heated mirrors only the driver side defrosted, leaving the passenger side all frosted up. Does anyone know what the likely cause is? Possible new element in the wing mirror?
If so has anyone had one replaced and know the cost?
Cheers

Most likely, you could pop the glass out and check that the wiring hasn't come undone. Not too likely though.
Not sure on cost but its unlikely to be very expensive. Try ebay, I know mirror glass for other cars is often on there.
-
For the all wing mirror unit it cost 240 quid!! I was driving along one day and some C**** hit my mine and smashed it. That was the cost of replacing mine. (NOT CHEAP) steve30

Thats the cost of the whole unit. The actual glass is available seperately and just pops on / off and shouldn't be expensive at all.
In fact
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-MK5-2004-ELECTRIC-DOOR-WING-MIRROR-GLASS-L-H_W0QQitemZ290332996556QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item439931f3cc
£20
Edit:
Its probably worth phoning VW and asking how much it is there, in my experience their parts are often cheaper than ebays or other retailers.

You could try plugging the driver's side glass into the passenger connector to see if it's just a faulty passenger side heater element.
Be careful removing the driver's side glass though, it's auto-dimming and costs much more that the passenger side.
-
yes the glass piece is only £30 odd quid from the stealers. There are two wires that connect to it. There is a guide on the oemplus website but can't access it at the moment. The guide is for replacing the plastic cover but shows you how to remove the glass bit too.

Depends, op maybe doesn't have the lux pack in which case it would just be the same price.

If you can find that guide that would be useful
So the element is on the back of the wing mirror glass?
-
yes the element is on the back of the mirror glass and the connector wires attach to the back of the mirror.
Could it be a fuse by any chance? Is there a way of checking whether the wires that connect to the mirror are producing current using a multi-metre thing?

Good point I will double check, all the other electrics seem OK as far as I can tell.
-
If one is working but the other isn't its almost certainly not the fuse. Checking there is voltage coming into the glass is a good shout, if there is then its deff the heating element in the glass thats failed.

When I original bought my golf the passenger side glass wouldn't work, looking on VCDS it brought up a fault about passenger heater element open or short to plus or something, VW replaced the glass under warranty, if it not in warranty then the glass is about £30 from VW
