As title, aux belt broke this morning and I've got one on order, should be here by 2pm ish.
I know the procedure, slacken the alternator mounting bolt and push down on the alternator to slacken and just put the belt on, but I need to know the route taken by the belt.
Someone please save this image and draw round the correct route by the belt please

*******Also checked the water pump pulley and it looks like there are hardly any grooves, should the grooves be the same depth as the alternator and the intermediate pulley? Ta.

Don't worry about it the pulley arrangement is/will be obvious, if it fits ok then it is ok.

I always seem to run into problems shortly before a RR don't I. Lesson learnt though...ALWAYS PUT ANTI FREEZE IN THE CAR.

Turned car on....
screeching sound....
I though, must be the power steering belt on this cold morning...
Anyway, got on with de icing the windscreen...
screeching still bad...
gave it some revs and it quietened down...
held the revs at 3k for a bit to warm engine to de mist...
No screeching...
Screeching came back...
I though ffs...
Suddenly started smelling burnt rubber...
Hear the sound of something snapping...
screeching stopped...........
Plumes of smoke coming from under the bonnet...
street covered in smoke stinking of burning rubber...
Open the bonnet...
Aux belt snapped...
Inspection begins...
Water pump pulley frozen solid...
Car has no anti freeze...
Tank cap off, water is slightly frozen...
FCUK SAKE!...
Lesson learnt. Don't run the car in winter withOUT anti freeze, I was lucky only the belt snapped and not the cyl head cracked unlike Ben Lessani last year. Ordered new belt from the local auto parts store and should be here for about 2pm, I'll be buying it along with some anti freeze.

Well car was running perfectly before the belt snapped. Coolant level is fine, when I returned to the car about 20 minutes later to leave a note on the windscreen (shouldn't be parked where I am) the coolant had melted enough to be fluid, so no major leaks or anything thankfully as far as I can see. Water pump hopefully is fine, I turned it over by hand and it seemed fine so no damage done in that area.
Yes I am major Plonker.

I didn't call anyone dumb.
As far as I know, IF a light is fitted it MUST work...If the light is NOT fitted then it doesn't get tested...
where'd you get the pictures from? Any more. The're really good.

Cheers mate, not a nice thing when this happens :sad: Ruined my day out.
At least I shall be changing the PAS belt too, which needed doing but I never bothered.

Yup. Stuck 2l in there now. I got the belt but it's the wrong one so it's too long. I've gone back to the shop and they ordered the new part in, should be here tomorrow at the same time, 2pm ish along with the new PAS belt.

That pic is a 16v and it looks nowt like mine, mines got a tensioner not adjusted on the alternator. Not sure if they changed at some point though!

well,
1, has the waterpump turned since you put it in
2, has thermostat opened thus allowing full flow ( include heater matrix :shocked: ) round the system
if no to any of the above then
sorry to say bloody hasn't :sick:

To be honest as Chuff is saying you need to run it to the fan kicks in really.

well without the belt water pump can't run... So no, can't do anything about it.
Hopefully it shall survive one more night :smiley:

Weather here says -2/-3. Enough for water to freeze but we've had that temperature a few times and nothing happened, only jsut last night which was bout -5.

its already put a sh!t load of snow down up here, on top of an already existing sh!t load :(

I'd have dropped all the coolant out and left all the pipes off over night till I had a new belt and had had a chance to get it up to temp and the thermostat open.

Would have been wise.
As soon as the weather starts to settle I'm gonna flush the coolant, fix a small leak from the front cyl head flange and refill with plenty of antifreeze and filtered water :smiley:
Need to do oil change at some point soon too.

Went to shop yesterday morning, got the part for 2pm, wrong part...too long.
Went back and got a refund, they ordered the "correct" part for today 2pm.
Went to fit it, still too fooking long, so went back and got a refund.
Called GSF and they have the correct part and correct part number from the belt that had snapped. I've put it on hold and a friend is taking me there to get hold of it, I'll fit it when I'm back.

filtered water doesnt make a difference?? boil some in ye kettle or a few pans of water a couple of times and let it go cold,same as ionised!!!boiling it takes out some sort of chemical,thats what the bubbles are when boiling it.50/50 mix is more than sufficiant in this country,as how often do we have weather like this. :cool:

I would flush the system as already suggested.
Its a bad mistake but i hope you're fonrtunate enough to not of done any damage :smiley:

So.
Fitted the belt in the heavy snow, on the street along with new PAS belt too. Great having a gf willing to hold a torch at night :grin:
Coolant pipes were frozen in the middle so boiled water and poured it over them slowly, after a few kettle fulls I started her up and it was great, no damage at all so that's good :cool:
Let the fan kick in and topped up the coolant and took it for a spin and all is well apart from it is snowing VERY hard here. Thank fook for ABS although in these conditions it really isn't doing much.
Got away with it this time but I learned a valuable lesson, never have just water in the coolant, always make sure you have some anti freeze.
