My golf has begun to make a wierd noise. As im driving along, i can hear a kind of quiet, soft thumping/scraping noise - im not sure where from though and passengers say they can feel a vibration in their footwell. From the drivers side, I cant feel anything odd and the car still drives great. The noise gets quicker as the car does - its not very loud at all, you can only hear it when the radio is low.
I took it to the dealer but they didnt have time to take it round the block, but the engineer said it was probably a gear box bearing. Does this sound right and is it a big job? - Anyone else had a similar problem like this before?

Ya dont say how old the car is and mileage.
Wouldnt have thought it was gearbox, more like track rod end or CV joint or wheel bearing.
Need to listen a bit more carefully, without the stereo on!

You havent mowed someone down and they are trapped underneath!!! ;D ;D ;)

Sorry, I forgot to mention that it is a '96 Mk3 2.0L 8v GTI with 71K on the clock. I've decided to take it down to the specialist on Wednesday and get him to have a good look.
In response to the running someone over - A couple of idiots on BMXs have come close before but there was a pheasant I blew to bits the other day! (One destroyed headlight later)

Oh Pheasants are nasty!
Could be a bit of bone somewhere! Big strong leg bones!

I took it to the specialist today - he jacked up one wheel, gave the engine a bit of gas to spin the wheel and then dumped it in neutral. Even I knew wot it was then, the horrible screeching noise meant a knackered wheel bearing.
The flipping dealer told me it was the gearbox!! >:( Either they're rubbish or they're after money!
