Title: Bought another golf at the weekend!
Post by: tobz. on 18 October 2004, 10:35
Yep bought me a winter car yesterday.
Nothing special but for ?120 I'm happy with it.
A reg 1.3 mk2 golf with a genuine 66k on the clock, mot til next march. An old dear has owned it since 1985 and at 75years old she decided to give up driving. The woman who sold it for her on ebay was the 1st owner who sold it to her 19years ago. Completely free from rot (original unblistered paint on the sill and all four wheelarches) with only a couple of minor dents. It's gagging for some t-cut though and the interior needs a good scrub.
I drove it 100miles home yesterday, I wasn't expecting much from a 4-speed 1300 but I was amazed by its performance. I put my foot down on the m2 but backed off at 90mph as I didn't really 'know' the car, it was still pulling well at 90!
One thing that really made me smile was when I was flicking through the bundle of paperwork with it and there was a mint copy of the sales brochure from 1984 introducing the brand new mk2 golf!!! Now that made it worth buying on its own  ;)

Right then what mods should I inflict on this little 1300 screamer???

They are quite quick aren't they!!  ;)

Although, i suppose i only think mine is quick cos i haven't really diven anything better :'(

What colour is it?

You should put a GTI grille on it......

I'd love to know what colour the bumpers are, are they still black, or have they gone really grey??

Well considering my daily driver is a 16v gti and I was still impressed by the speed of the 1300 I was say that was pretty good.
It's navy blue or at least it will be again when I've finished with the t-cut. I did the bonnet and front wings when I got it home just to see how it would come up and they are a nice deep shiny blue now. I think the bumpers were almost white but somebody has sprayed them black now!

I may go down the route of a four light grille and that but on the other hand I might leave the early grille and chrome badge as it is to keep it looking as it should. I'm definately gonna get down the scrappy at sometime in search of some decent doorcards etc as it currently has a ghastly light blue interior  :o

Will get some pics of it next weekend after I've been busy with the t-cut.

Hey Gaz
Might be interested in that arch kit, is it early spec though?
Can't remember off-hand if it has any sort of rubbing strips down the side, I don't think it does.
The red one went on saturday to dubvrs on this forum. He is planning a full stripdown, respray and rebuild to a very smoothed euro look. I told him to make sure he posts some pics on this site, he said he would probably have a website dedicated to the project aswell. Should be interesting to see it coming along. Actually I think it's back up your way now in stoke-on-trent.

Glad to hear the car is going well Paul, yep I had a bit of an impulse buy on ebay just couldn't bring myself to drive the oakie through the cr@ppy weather. Think my finances can just about stretch to running a little 1.3

Make sure you do post those pics as Me & Gaz are both keen to see how it comes along.
