Title: Mk III gearbox problem?
Post by: kazaaa on 31 December 2009, 20:00
hi,

i went to see a Mk III golf diesel 1.9, but there was a problem with the gearbox. The gearstick felt really floppy and loose and everytime i tried to put it into 1st, it kept going into 3rd and when i put it into 2nd it goes into 4th.

What is the problem with it, and can it be easily fixed?

Thanks for your help

Worn linkages/bushes

Doesn't the Diesel use the 02a gearbox like the 16v & VR6?

If so its a cable changer/hydraulic clutch and the problem could be down to either a slipped cable, just needs adjusting, or a worn g/box tower mech in which case steer well clear.

I have a tdi and it is a hydralic clutch...

I'd say if the gearstick is all over the place, check the 13mm nut on the linkage at the the top of the gearbox.  Also, lift the gear gaitor and have a look see if anything is obviously wrong...

Let us know how you get on!

had this problem in work, customer traded their car in because of it, we tightened it up and then used the car for a charity rally across europe (dumball)
