First things first, I am not selling my MK3, just my astra, and the reason its going is to make room for a MK2.
I am only after a driver as I will be using the car to do a lot of mileage in so something economical is needed.
So can you MK2 buffs give me some info on what to look out for, and what would be the best model to suit my needs

my 8v is more economical than my driver, prob cos its injection. i personally would get a f/g/h/j plate 8v for an every day drive. 16v if you want but economy suffers a little
-
Whats the difference in tghe insurance premiums likely to be tho between a driver and an 8v????
-
depends, but not loads to be honest, my gti was only about 150 quid more, but after a year is now less than the driver was, im with elephant.co.uk and they are cheap. get some online quotes for both cars to get an idea
-
Depends on your age.
-
you can pickup nice 90 spec 8v's for around 1k today. mileage aint a big worry if its been well looked after. rust is what you need to be looking for!!
-
yeah tidy body work is a must cos mechanicals are relatively easyy to sort on golfes
-
about economy i could get 390 miles out of a tank in my 1.6 driver when i was doing motoway journeys :P
-
i think that would have increased after you crashed it due to the extra 'speed' holes in the wing :Pand the fact it was lighter cos on wing was unpainted. ;)
-
lol that dent must have f**ked the aerodynamics cos it was well sketchy over 80 lol, could be the driver suspension tho ;D
-
Think I will be opting for a 1.4 driver due to insurance and petrol costs, hope you dont mind me joining in on the mk2 forum tho even tho it wont be a gti
-
drivers are 1.6. you can get 1.3 cl and c's and a 1.1 and a 900cc :o (thats gonna be s h i t) you can also get 1.6 and 1.3 ryders and 1.8 gl's etc
-
or sell the mk3 gti, get a nice mk2 gti and another economy car mk2 or 3 cos mk2 gti's are more fun than mk3's :D :P
-
My 8v will readily do 40mpg at 70 on m-way.
Just averaged 37 going from Hudds to Bristol to Liverpool n back. And i may have crept over 70 at times :o
Its much more economical than my old 1.6 driver.

Hi, I have a 1989 MkII Gti, it averages 38 - 40 MPG. I have also just bought a new Renault Megane 1.5 cDi with a claimed 60 MPG, actually 52 MPG. The Megane is great to drive and has amazing accelaration and overtaking power, however, I would rather drive my Gti anyday. It is so much more alive and responsive.

Just do it. ;D
-
my 8v does 25 mpg.... but i just can't help flooring it? ;D
-
I would much prefer to get a gti, but not sure if the insurance is gonna be ecomical, esecially with my redunancy etc.
Oh well have to wait and see
