Yo.? Not been on the site for a wee while cos been v. skint, so not got any plans for me car + therefore no enthusiam.? Then had the bright idea the other day of trading in my Mk4 for a nice late Mk2 16v, to get me some quick cash.?
I need some advice though, mk2-peeps....
When did the mark2 stop production? (i.e. what's the newest mk2 I could get?)
What are the main things I should look out for in late Mk2's?
How much do you spend generally a year in servicing/ repairs for a mark2 of average mileage?
How much should I be paying for one?
Cheers dudes.
Rich

the latest is february 1992 'j' plate, i think they might only be 8v tho, but you can find some late registered 'k' plate gti's around they are generally five door and in white. i reckon pay around 2500 for an absolute minter with low mileage.
check out www.matey-matey.com for a buying guide.
i reckon i spend a bit thru the year but i like to keep it in perfect nick. if you just did service parts and general disposable parts and did the work yourself i reckon you would be looking at not even a grand a year roughly, if you just drove it that is and werent to pinickety! all guestimated tho!
-
cheers.? I've spotted one in autotrader for 2750.? Its a J-reg 16v with 95000 miles on the clock.? I lady owner.? :o
-
yeah nice! take some one that knows tho cos i looked at a few saying one lady owner never ragged etc but i found amp wiring and tints and stuff so i walked away. under a hundred k is good just be wary of a car that hasnt done regular mileage cos things are more likely to go wrong due to it sitting around a lot etc. also make sure its got loads of history and spend hours looking at it if it doesnt feel right then it isnt- walk away.

Just a wee hint, remember the 16 valvers are not designed to run on orinary unleaded fuel, the octane rating is too low. The 8 valver is, it also has a knock sensor to retard the ignition should the octane rating be too low. The 16 valver is okay with a higher octane rated fuel. Sorry for stating the obvious. But before I bought my present 8 valver I was on the lookout for a 16 valver and looked at quite a few and all of the sellers told me they were running their cars on ordinary unleaded, this put me off buying any of them. I would be interested to hear what owners of 16 valvers have to say on this matter.
-
that is totally true, but with the availability of high octane fuels i dont think it would be a mega problem. my 8v says 98ron minimum. i cant afford super or optimax so i run it on lrp which is 97ron.
you can adjust the ignition timing to compensate but then you lose power :(
-
90 spec 16v's can run on normal unleaded if need be, they actually have a different ECU than pre90 16v's. but you'll wanna run it on Super Unleaded anyhow for the extra get up n go!
as for dates, i know somebody in Belfast who has a Jun 92 Oak Green 16v. so they are out there. his also has side impact bars!!! :o dont see many on them in a mk2!
onto buying. as everybody says. dont just jump at the first one you see. take your time and look around. bodywork is the main problem, the engine is bullet proof. no real need either for a full service history. a part service history is fine. you've gotta remember that the cars are now appraoching 15yr old. so people aint gonna pay VW service prices!
tbh there is no point paying a massive premium for as late a car as possible! i recently sold my 91 16v as it was rotten in below. outside there wasnt a mark in it.
i then went an bought an 89 16v and it is 100 times better than the 91 16v. it was given a full respray just under 2 years ago and really is faultless. i paid decent enough money for it considering it came with factory leather & BBS splits. but is still miles below 2750!!!
-
i got side impact bars? ??? mine is a late feb 1992 run out 8v
-
have you got side impact bars?
as far as i know, only cars that left the factory in 1992 have side impact bars, so thats how you know a true 92 car and not one that was sitting about down at the docks for 6mths before being shipped to a dealer and then registered
-
yeah i have i remeember from when i did my door skins, they are like the size of a scaffolding pole, i think its only one, just below the line in the metal of the door just below the handle. my brothers hasnt got these so he just has a metal skin protecting him from side impacts! :o
-
yes that would be them!
-
richy,
make sure you check the door cards for sign of water retention, as this would indicate at possibly having a rotten floor, this is a killer of mk2's if you see this run! :o
check for rattly sounding tappets @ idle, another cause for concern.
on the whole tho you cant go wrong with the mk216v, its a great very capable car.
youve got the right idea of going for a late one, if i was to buy another it would defianatly be a 91/92 h/j plate, schwartz black or oak green.
look to pay any where from 2 to 4k :o for one in good order.
good luck man :)

I have one of the earliest 16valvers with the quarter windows and runs on optimax only otherwise it pinks like hell and dont like it. Has been running fine and has done 147 thousand miles n ow. Never let me down. Spent a lot on it when I bought it though. When I bought it it was a dog, the floor was wet through and I bought it pretty much in the dark (note:don't do this!) but I only paid 400 notes for it. My advice , check for water leaks allover, check arches coz them arch covers can hide a multitude of sins as I found out. If its got seat covers on, check all the seats match and that they're not f**ked. Try and get one with a leather interior for the price your willing to pay, you will be glad of this later as I found out that the leather interiors that people are selling are more expensive second hand than what I paid for the car. If its got big wheels on check driveshafts and gators coz i find that bigger wheels tend to wear these areas out more. Anyway theres lots more but i got to go, so good luck
regards
marco

yeah id say check for rust cos this will be the most expensive thing to fix. and have a go in a few good valvers so you know what you should be buying, i found a lot of them were slow as hell, probably ragged to death >:(
and i also noticed you get better value with non big bumper models/90 spec and theres some real low mileage ones to be found.
get one you will have a lot of fun ;D

Cheers to all of you for your advice. Great stuff.... keep it comin'!
P.S. veedubgti16v, your pic don't work.
-
thought you were after a scooby mate ?
-
I was considering a scooby for a while (sorry peeps).? However, due to unforseen circumstances I am broke.? A scooby would financially cripple me, what with the higher insurance and mega fuel consumption.?
Plus I get the bonus of a sweet little motor with added cash bonus! I've seen the veedub light.? I'm born again!? ? ?:D

removed from a bone stock 87 little window 8 valve? ;)
yet our 88 valver don't have it but will soon? ;D
sorry about the hijack
-
hey richy, i wondered what had happened to you, good to see you back again :) keep the faith, don't get a scooby!
-
Hi Jv. Don't worry ...no scoob for me.? Sorry Didn't reply to your mail a while back.? Offer's still open if you need a hand? ;)?
I'm actaully really looking forward to the change to a mk2.? I'm not in a super-rush but due to broke-ness the 3ish grand that I'll probably pocket from the deal will come in v. handy!!!
Gonna look at a loads before I take the plunge though. Never bought privately - always from a trader, so not sure how I can bridge the funds gap between buying/selling... a private seller won't take credit cards, and I' can't afford to live without a car for more than a couple of days.
S'pose I could always sell to a trader for quick cash, but that way I'd probably lose out on the best part of a grand. ???

-
youll pick up a bargain, man, all this talk make me want a mk2 golf again!! :D
-

its not tapered I think thats a bad pic ;)
the flat end is for the hinge end of the door
;)

which pics dont work rich? the gallery link?
also for rust checks, check all arches(obv rears are more inportant) and look behing all window seals. most other things mechanical can be fixed/changed pretty cheaply, but remember tappets etc are twice the cost ?>:( :D ?try and get one with a smoothe as possible syncromesh (usually 1st to 2nd) erm cant think of anything else right now ???
-
Cheers! Your gallery link at the bottom of your posts says something like 'this entry doesn't exist'. Also your little sig pic to the left just shows a cross.
-
cheers richy, sorted the gallery, the cross can stay tho cant be arsed ;D
