Title: Went To Buy A GTI today.
Post by: Captain Sensible on 27 December 2009, 19:03
Went along to my local VW dealer today Arnold Clark in Paisley and came away seething with anger.
First of all he would not budge on a discount 0%
Next was the value of my Mitsubishi Outlander which is the top of the range Elegance model 07 reg with 42,000 miles. The car is spotless
Having done my home work I know I should expect 12,000 in part exchange.
I was offered 10,000
But what annoys me is the lack of knowledge he has for the product he is selling and his cocky manner.

So think tomorrow I will give the what car target price team a call and see if the can put me in touch with a dealer.

No discount at all is totally unacceptable. I got 12% off without even asking!

They are miserable in Paisley that's why. You should have come through to Glasgow
Seriously though, folk are waiting 4, 5 and 6 months for a GTI with dealers selling out of their allotted allocation. They know they can sell them so not much incentive to give a discount but keep trying.

Have tried any of the online brokers like:

They simply cannot get cars and so can sell everyone they can get. Theres no insentive for them to discount. I know my local dealers are the same due to this and are crying out for new and used mk6s to the exstent they are paying top dollar for used mk6's just to have something to sell!!!

If i was you i would wait 6 month or to at least end of march as things settle down and VW catches up with the back log at the factory.

Also it seems like a kick in the teeth when they give you a trade in value for your car, but bear in mind, they are taking a conservative stab at what it will be worth in 3-4 months time when the new car arrives.

I got the same reaction at VW Jordanhill. Ended up going through to Verve Wishaw who done me a not bad, but not great deal. As has already been said, there's not many of them willing to offer any discounts as they know someone will be along to pay top whack.

The trade in wasn't brilliant either, again as someone mentioned they are trying their best to guess you trade in as it could be months later when you actually sit in the new car.

Good luck with your hunt, There is also a Verve in Dalmarnock, Glasgow that you could try... let me know how you get one mate.

I had simular service in two of my local dealers which wouldnt even entertain me in placing an order on a golf r, i know i look young but they were taking the piss, and made me wait 3/4 of an hour and then attending to some one on a second hand polo
so i went to listers stratford (recomended buy a friend) , top noch service ther cant fault them

I got £1800 more for the ED30 than any other dealer offered (BMW, Audi and Land Rover) and 3% on the car + free GAP insurance. I have bought a few cars from this dealer but it seemed to be the norm that they would all do 3% at the time. Why not buy a used/demo as they seem to be £2-3,000 below list?

i'd use one of the brokers as suggested.  You don't then have to deal with any cocky sales person and you also get a good discount.
the only problem you are now going to have is that even if you order now you will probably not be able to get delivery on a factory order until May or June + theres the increase in vat and a 2.68% price rise on the Golf so it's going to be even more expensive.

How about an Evo X instead of a Golf?

Have been round three more dealers today with no discount being offered.

I know of a broker who is giving a discount of 8% this month, unfortunately my trade in is holding me back. Nobody seems to want it was the answer from the broker. Its only in group H for road tax has everything and more you could ever want on a car and gets over 40mls to the gallon.

All the garages are offering me ten grand for it. It cost me twenty five and a half grand two and a half years ago. What car has it priced today as 12,600 as part exchange so I thought I would get about 11,000

The Evo might be fast but it is one ugly looking car. Anyway I want a VW GTI

Not a salesman no, but you will probably find that those that have cancelled there July/August/September orders are due to unhelpful brokers/dealership handlers. I would much rather had the chance to pay more and deal with a real person at a local dealer whos ass i could go kick!

Also be a bit careful of that lot they offer a good price but when you take it to one of there centres they go over the car with a fine toothcomb and any little mark or anything and they start knocking the price down and down.

But they are only middle men. Once they put you in touch with the garage you deal with the garage.
Or the OP could get figures from one of the brokers and then see if the garages will match or at least come close

But presmably these brokers get commission so is it not in their interests to ensure all goes well and the people they put you in touch with actualy do have a face ... or a butt!??

Thats why i said garage handler. You end up dealing with the fleet person who are use to dealing with large orders from large companys you may get looked on as small insignificant single order and they may not have a clue or want to help if something out of the ordinary crops up. Fine if everything goes to plan but if it does not......

But presmably these brokers get commission so is it not in their interests to ensure all goes well
You would think so but asking about that does not seem to have been the case. I guess its down to supply and demand they can easily fill that slot with someone else...

If I were you, I'd try to sell your Outlander privately. Dealers aren't going to want a car like that, especially as the facelifted version has just come out. I can understand your annoyance, but VW dealers aren't going to touch it. If you can sell it yourself, you should get more than with a trade-in, plus the VW dealer will be more likely to offer some kind of discount, as you won't be dragging a ball & chain into their showroom.

In Holland buying a car with "a proper" discount is no less hassle ....

My GTI (old and new) is a lease car....after visiting 4 dealers...(and not letting the next one know what the previous one gave as discount)
2 of them gave exactly 300 euro and one 1000 but one went as high as 3500 euro (that is even after lease co discount)...
Afterwards they phoned me that they went a long with the 3500...but heh...sorry for them suckers...

Anyway so I choose the one with the 3500 euro  lucky for me he was also the most enthousiastic dealer resulting in me buying a lot of extra's
on top of an already heavy spec car....eg he talked me into buying led rears...and full leather....3 collegues with different cars and dealers experienced the same this year....dealers not wanting to sell....to me this is f&^&ing unbelievable.....it is their job...why don't they make something of it !!!!

I hear ya mate, they take the pi**, this sort of thing makes me want to buy something else. At the moment a New Audi A3 works out cheaper spec for spec. I only managed to get 3% and a rubbish offer on the part ex against my old A3. I would say with the right garage you might get 7% as this is what fleet companies seem to get, might have to settle for 5%. Saw the post saying 12%, thats amazing (was it MK6 through uk dealer though?). Regarding the part ex price, you will never get the right deal for it through a VW garage, you need to sell it private. My other suggession is look for Second hand GTi if you have lots of bits on the option list, e.g. good deals on cars with Leather and DSG etc... Finally, as pointed out its all about demand and the gits at VW have created demand through limited supply, wait until March/April, by that time more cars will be coming though and more on the used market with another plate change in March. Delivery on new cars is about April at mo, so remember part ex value will fall on you car till then, so another good reason for used. If you are not happy selling private, try your Mitsi garage, they are more likely to offer more than VW, that normally how it works.

Could always go used MK5, not my choice but much cheaper option buy thousands and residual after 3 or 4 years would be not much different to MK6.

I'm in France and was the very first person in the country to order one when they became available on May 1st. I eventually negotiated a 14% discount. Had to wait 3.5 months for delivery, though. I suppose I must have been lucky and got in there before VW/dealers realised they could charge what they wanted for this awesome car.
