Just opted out of the MK6 & gone for a Range Rover Sport, it was a close decision between the Rangie & a Golf R, but due to current VW prices thought I'd try my money elsewhere.
Can't wait...........Gutted not to have a Golf anymore though.
Have I made the right choice? :undecided:

You're posting this on a Golf forum... what do you think the answer is going to be?!?!
I suppose it depends on your circumstances. I'm guessing you live on a farm or something if you need a Range Rover?
Personally I drive to and from work all week, and like to go out for a blast at the weekends. A golf is ideal for me... I'm usually the only one in the car, its a good size for parking anywhere. Its discreet, fast, and has a good sized boot! I can get 5 people in it if I have to (not very often) and considering the performance, it gets a decent MPG. Yes the Golf R is expensive for a Golf! I could get 2 and a bit Golf 1.4TSI's for the same price. I'm sure some of the guys on here could write you a list of what else I could get from a used Porsche / BMW etc showroom!
I believe that unless you're doing offroading, then a Range Rover is a bit of a waste of time. Yes, for the 5 days a year it snows (maybe a few more this year  ) its useful, but other than that its like driving a tank around. My fiancee's old man has a Merc ML63 - which is an absolute dream to drive. 0-60 in under 5 seconds and great handling. He has it for transporting around his relatives (79-92 years old and too old to scootch into a smaller car!), going to play golf, and driving to work. He gets about 200 miles from £110 of fuel! If I HAD to buy a 4x4, it would be one of these! It looks good compared to most, it sounds amazing, and its like a rocket!
I'll stick with the Golf though thanks!

Don't blaim you.

I love both the golf and the range, so can understand the problem you are facing.
-
Uglier, slower and thirstier.
Mid life crisis ?

First of all you should have read readers reviews on the What Car wed site as it has a terrible reliability record

Your Range-Rover will be fine for at least the first ten months if not the first year, then slowly little things will start to go wrong. The headlining will come unstuck. There'll be a glitch in the electronics when it's cold. The windows will stop working. Nothing in itself will be too major, but before long you'll know your dealer so well that you'll be exchanging Christmas cards.
We had our Mk 2 Golf for 20 years and still it just went and went. Good luck to you. You'll need it.
As for me, a Golf Mk 6 R with 265 bhp and AWD will do just fine.

but before long you'll know your dealer so well that you'll be exchanging Christmas cards.

so you cancelled the mk 5.5 and got a range rover 0.5 instead

Or maybe the R was his midlife little red sports car crisis

The RRS is not as nice to drive, even with the new 3.0 TD engine, but has more space and more class. It's on my shortlist for my next car.

Nope don't really live on a farm or anything, just seem to spend more & more on a Golf every 12-18 months & fancied a change........... The price on the R is really what pushed me.

Hilarious   But you have a point!
Don't blaim you.

At least I have two supporters.......!!
Seriously though if VW hadn't pushed the R prices so high I'd have stayed, the price of the leather is disgusting
But all is not lost, tonight I have been scouring Autotrader & I have found a nice 3 door MK5 GTI which I can use as a run around alongside the rangie, based on some of the RRS reliability comments posted here tonight I may be using it more than I know!
Anyway cheers folks.........................See you in the MK5 section now or possibly any land rover garage/repair centre near you

Completely agree, i hate diesels but that engine is something else! Only problem is the reliability, lets hope the new model is better, the interior is superb!
-
RRS just screams wannabe
-
Dont Blame you, Vw prices are too much from what they are now offering
-
Watched Top Gear tonight... just thought of this thread the whole way through it when they kept going on about how unreliable the Range Rover is!!
-
VWs reliability is not what it was either sadly.

Lol, same here. As the RR was driving off the barge, cruising through the rain forest and driving down what looked like a 1 in 2 sand dune at the end, I kept thinking "hmmm, don't think my fragile little GTI could do that with its delicate Interlagos wheels!"

It is still better than a lot of others, we now have the internet to find this stuff out (all the faults people seem to have) It's just other makes were so bad you'd hear about it through people who owned them etc.
-
I've done some off roading in a rrs - awesome vehicle. Don't get the 20" rims unless you want to look a player. They ruin the car.
-
Good luck with the Range Rover, your going to need it.
Also it is not really a Range Rover as such, built on the Disco chassis and shares almost nothing with the real Range Rover
-
:undecided:
Thats like saying a honda civic isnt a honda as it based on a jazz platform and uses parts that are not from the jazz?
Its made by range rover - its a range rover.
-
its more a land rover than a range rover.
the RRS is made on the T5 platform and the same line as the Discovery.
Magna have just started making the Aston Martin Rapide in Austria, does that make it a Magna? No it doesn't, I rest.....

have to agree they are just wanna be drug dealer cars, or people who want to drive on a slant and with one hand

In London they are drug dealers cars mate, that or people that own bookies, illegals or prostitutes!

and all Golf drivers are expert in sweeping generalisations...

A vet friend of mine has a RRS and rates it very highly. She is able to get all her equipment in the back and gets down farm tracks in the winter where no one else would venture.
Even been known to carry the odd sheep or two.
As said before on this forum it's a case of ETTO.

the irony

Between "R" & a RR sport, there are a different kettle of fish.
It all depends on your requirement really. One thing for sure the RR sport's running cost will be much higher & so is the petrol bill. Another factor to consider is the reliability issue. Don't think it can outlast the "R." To go for a SUV of this range, derv would be the way to go. These modern turbo diesel engines produce a tremendous amount of torque. Is torque you want in a SUV & not outright hp. Think Audi Q7 V12 twin turbo diesel model available on special order. Price is close to 95,000 quid. IMHO, I would compare an S3, Focus RS, BM 135i & 335i with the "R."
-
Be interested to see what you think when it arrives as I am just waiting for a Discovery 4 to come up with the spec I want (demo or max 6 month). I did consider the Freelander but not much difference space wise over a golf.
-
As others have said, it's hard to compare the RR Sport with a Golf R. However, having borrowed a Range Rover Sport for a few days I can totally see the appeal - it's a fantastic all-round vehicle and very comfortable. The handling is unbelievable for a vehicle of that type. If you're getting one with the new 3.0 V6 diesel that is a fantastic engine.
I will admit that LR don't have the best reputation for reliability but it's not as poor as people make out. Not anymore anyway.
