Post by: rugbymad on 26 December 2009, 10:13
Merry crimbo,

My warning light for coolant is coming on, this happened a few weeks ago and i topped it up, it disappered, there is no leak as level is still the same, the outside temp is -3.5 today, could this be the problem, i need some sort of answer as i have a long long journey to do in 10 days, germany.
will the car be ok to drive? as it is?

thx in advance

Faulty coolant sensor would be my first thought.

Seeing as you are going on a long journey I would get it plugged into a diagnostic computer and get the codes read, this should tell you what needs replacing.

I had the same problem on a 170 TDI A3, on starting it would sometimes give a coolant warning, then after a mile or so it would go, but as you have said levels etc.... were all fine.  New sensor is what I fitted but that was after 3 months & it caused no problems in that time.
