Title: Which injectors?
Post by: Gti-Grimes on 22 December 2009, 18:07
Just had a problem diagnosed as a blocked/faulty injector and was wondering which part to order? Have a mk2 with abf head and 9a bottom. However unsure if it is possible it is just the original 1.8 16v injectors would have be re-used?

Thanks all...

Depends on what fuel injection is on there. K-Jet or Digifant? Picture of the engine bay would help.

Will an injector from a 1.8 16v fit or are they different sizes?

1.8 16v ones are probably what you want, it depends which fuel lines you used! 9a ones have a different thread, though the injector is otherwise the same.

looking at your pics I think you have the 9a lines on there!  best bet is to whip an injector out and let us know the part number.

Its probably a good idea to take all 4 out and make sure all of them are the same, could be you have a mix n match of fuel lines/injectors!  You'll want to replace the injectors as a set anyway, so its something you would have had to do eventually.

Update on this. Its not the injectors as swapped over the "2nd" one which is the missing cylinder with the "1st" one and the 2nd cylinder is still missing. Pulled plug out and no change in noise or running. Still sparking so plug and lead are fine. Next thing i suppose is a compression test although it sounds as if there is compression.  Any other ideas?

have you actually physically checked if fuel is coming out of that injector, could be a fault in the line or the metering head.  pull all 4 injectors and do a spray/volume test.

1. find 4 containers of equal size and tape them, all together
2. pop each injector into a container
3. pull the black wires from the coil to prevent any chance of a spark
4. pop the inlet boot off the metering head to gain access to the metering flap
5. bridge the fuel pump relay socket with a chunky bit of wire, relay is 67, 167 or 80, and pins you want are the 2 largest ones
6. smoothly lift the flap off its top all the way to fully open, then allow it to drop again (magnet helps here)

watch the spray pattern on all 4, and measure the volume delivered is roughly equal.  if any are different swap injectors and repeat. if problem moves its the injector, if not swap the fuel lines over and repeat. If problem moves its the lines, if not its the metering head.

Before you crack loose any lines or injectors disconnect pump relay and move metering head flap to release the pressure, and wrap it in a rag before you crack loose. ideally you should leave it a few hours.

last test is injector leak, wipe the tips of all 4 injectors once you drop the flap and disconnect pump relay jumper wire then wait for at least 15 seconds, they should not drip
