Title: push button start
Post by: hyland770 on 22 December 2009, 14:37
anyone done this?
there a couple of threads on here about it but wanted to know if it has been done succesfully, would be a really cool / cheap mod if it can be done!

I'll tell you now, it's a complete pain in the arse!

My dad has a push button start in his VR and I get confused every time I drive it.

Immobiliser fob into the socket thing on the dash.. then key in the ignition.. turn key to "on" position.. push button

Hassle!!

I wouldn't chop my ignition wires

The correct kit on ebay shows a relay and a fuse so I'd be using those if I were you

it is a pointless mod, but i still think it would be cool to have one, plus makes your car harder to steal if they dont know which button to press!

Those who steal cars don't need to know, which button to press...If they really want to steal it, they will find a way around it anyway.

I would still run it through a relay.

The Ignition will still work of the key so having a push button start will be irrelevant for a thieve
Title: Re: push button start
Post by: jonnyb on 22 December 2009, 18:41
Yeah i have got one installed on my car.  Got it done as the parts behind the stearing wheel wouldn't budge (when removing them to sort out an ignition problem)

Was suposedly an easy job (done by a mate) and is kind of cool lol.

Just take the feed from your horn and put it to the starter solnoid, instant push button start.

I will say the big issue with this idea is the coded key....you may need to tape the transponder near the ignition switch receiver thing as the range isn't always good! and doing that means you loose the factory immobiliser and can void your insurance!

Will not matter as the key needs to be in the ign. and turned before it will start any way.

Can I ask what the point is?

The new Civics have them and they are just annoying. Turn the key anyway, then push the button, not being funny but what is the point? Plus if you don't relay it and just join ignition wires, surely that is just hot wiring the car with the steering lock on?
Title: Re: push button start
Post by: hyland770 on 22 December 2009, 23:49
this is driving me nuts.....

1. The point is i want one because I think in MY opinion it will be cool (and im like i little kid who likes pressing buttons that do stuff)
2. the point has been made if a thief wants to steal my car they are able to do so, so lets change the record for that one
3. i will buy the kit of ebay

okay? i want one for my car cos i think its cool, end of.

Double fail, if you think its cool then carry on.

I could understand it on a £250k supercar but I certainly wouldn't be fitting one to my 1.6 Golf. I'd find something better to spend the tenner on. For example 80 miles worth of petrol

does it? does the normal golf front end not work or something, seems to work on mine!?

On every forum iv seen trying to find some info on this subject, all this question does is make people mad!!! i just want some advice on how to do it like what wires i need to wire to a relay and which wires to wire to a switch from people that either know or have done it before!

Any help would be appreciated cheers!

Unfortunately I don't have any fitting advice as mine was already on my golf when I bought it.

But I will say I love this mod, when people jump in my golf and I say press that button there for me (all casual), then they do and they're all like "woooow".

Mine's a crome button with a crome surround, and whoever fitted it must've done it properly because the button won't work whilst the engine is running, and you can't start the engine via the ignition.

I love it.... Thumbs up for me

It should not anyway as that will burn the starter out, also what happens if the button fails.

hmmm im going to run mine in a parallel circuit so the ignition will still work the usual way, pointless but cool i think, the kit shoudl get here tommorrow or next week sometime and ill do a write up so people can do it too if they so please!

Fair point.

They irritate the sh!te out of me personally, but fair play.

Fit an OEMish looking one, the big red button ones only just about work in Civics.

I do believe i will be screwed........... And not in the good way hahaha..!!

I would hope that, with the key in the ignition, and the ignition still on, i would be able to pull the button back out of the dash and cross the wires to power the starter motor.

Or the car will blow up and the problem will be irrelivant  :undecided:

Then when you wire it up make sure you do so so that you can still turn the car on via the key.

i used the button off ebay
just hooks up to the two thick wires (red/black & red) coming from the ignition and it gets power from (red/white & green/blue) from the cigarette lighter.

works fine and i like it

Im still waiting for it in the post what with all these bank holidays!! So the kit from ebay was easy to fit and works well!? How easy is it to fit, do you have to take apart the interior? Cheers, pete.

That is a bad move, you will overload the circuit and blow the fuse.

The kit from ebay comes with an additional fuse and relay, so surely that would be ok? Im sure when desiging it the probably thought about that....i hope :s!!!

their was a push button in the 16v gti i sold a couple of month back, it was already in the car when i aquired it, i will say it was annoying and pointless, you had to have the key in the ignition, then press the alarm fob, then press the push button start.. quicker and easier to just use the key in the first place haha

but each to their own i guess

was easy to fit, works fine by turning the key to position 2 and then pressing the button. You do have to take some of the interior apart but this is just a few screws in the dash, i managed to blow the fuse by me being a general idiot :undecided: but i havent had any other problems with it!
