I've been having usual problem recently, oil light flash, rev's drop dies.
I replaced fuel relay 167 and ECU/hall relay30 which made no dirfference.
Basically after driving the car for a while (maybe 10mins...don't know if maybe when engine reaches certain temp) it just stalls and does it irratically after that.
Today it stalled 6times in the last mile of my drive home, twice at traffic lights and took an age to start again each time (although started straight away first time). It's now become unbearable to drive!!!!!!
I just noticed that i have been using the spare VW key i got with the car and not the key with the button the previous owner had been using (button seems defunct but haven't check battery in it yet). Could this be having any bearing on immobiliser (I'm assuming a 95 GTi has one fitted as standard??)
I'm clutching at straws here I know, but have ordered a new crank sensor which is my next port of call to try and sort the beast
many thanks in advance guys

Could be coolant temp sensor again. Controls the fueling as the engine warms up.

have you replaced the power relay? or is that the ecu relay? the way youl find out more is by reving the car while at idle rev it quite a bit and if the car cuts out then its the power relay. i dont know if the ecu and power relay is dif, i had the same prob took it to a specialist and he checked it with vag-com and he said that the ecu wasnt getting power and said 2things 1 ecu might need replacing or its the "power" relay. and then replaced it with a dif colour and since then its been fine touch wood.
hope that helps mate.
p.s have you checked it with vag-com?
Shark

replaced the crank sensor on Tuesday and fingers crossed it's been ticketyboo since!
The old one had a worn bit in wire where goes round back oil filter probably not helping!
Hopefully i can now enjoy it a bit more, have the metal coolant pipe to replace and few other wee fiddly jobs to do
-
oh yes I know the coolant pipe you mean! - done it on my GL and will be doing it on the GTI next year!
Good stuff.
-
Is there anything special you need to do when replacoing it or just rip it out and throw the new one in along with antifreeze?
-
yup - just drain the system, replace and refil.

Hi, my car has done this a couple of times and checking the sensor the case seems to be cracked so I have ordered one from here;
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Crankshaft-position-Sensor-fits-SEAT-IBIZA-Toledo_W0QQitemZ370198703655QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item56318fee27
Anyone used them? seems to be the same part number and hopefully should fit my 98 R 8v without issue?
-
I've had this exact same problem for ages!
I probably have the same problem still to be honest but I lost faith in driving my car far distances so it doesnt get the chance lol.
Im now having another problem- as soon as i start driving my car I hear a rattling from underneath the centre of the car, when this happens I seem to lose power but intermitently and my rev counter suggests that the engine is running smooth.
Is this probably related to the problem I (and you) was having before? And if not does anyone have any advice on what it might be?
I love my golf but driving it is becoming increasing nerve-racking lol. Save me!
Thank you all :)

Hi there,
I have exactly the same issue with my 95 8valve.
I am going to try ecu 30 relay and 167 fuel pump relay first.
Have looked a couple of times at the 'cutting out' thread (36 pages) which has loads of info.
Other possibilities I am going to look at are Crank position sensor, Hall sensor (change Dizzy) or loose wiring/poor connections on plugs and loom between sensors. Last suggestion would be that if the cutting out is pretty regular get it plugged into a VAG com and wait for it to cut out and see what codes it throws!
Please post if you find solution as really can't afford to fault chase myself!
Good luck to you

Hi Guys
I need to order a crankcase sensor, the car won't start at all unless I fiddle with the crankcase sensor with a screwdriver.
Is this part ok? I know someone else on here has asked already but i need to order one ASAP.
my car is a 98 8v AGG code.

Cheers people

Can't reply to your PM for some reason Tom?
I havent fitted the sensor on my car as yet as it stalled a couple of times but hasn't done it since.
I was just checking it yesterday and the part looks the same and someone else on here confirmed it should be OK so I would go for it. It has a 12 month guaranteee anyway.
Let us know how you get on!

Here's one specifically for mk3...

That's a Lambda sensor/probe that deals with fueling not crank position sensor!

Ah crap, I always confuse them two

Easy mistake
