Specifically, do you think I can prevent my heated seats from switching off everytime I switch off the engine? At the moment, if I switch off the engine for more than a couple of minutes, I have to remember to turn the seats back on when I start up again. Not the end of the world, perhaps, but it remembers the AC temperature settings, so why not the seats?
My dealer has a habit of saying 'it can't be done' whenever I ask them anything remotely technical/unusual, so does anyone here know for sure if VAGCOM will do the trick?

Would this not be a fire hazard?!

Not to mention a small but significant drain on the battery

'I' may be the one reading this wrong... but what I think he's meaning is...
On the MK5 you had a hard switched dial... in that if you left your seats on number 5 - the dial stayed on 5 until you changed it otherwise.
The MK6 has an electronic switch - and when you turn the car off - the switch comes back on at 0 (or off)
He wants to be able to turn the car on and it still to be at 5 - or whatever it WAS on at.
I'd quite like to know what goodies I could do with a VagCom... as I may need to buy one to code my RNS / Bluetooth etc. Obviously I could pay a dealer to do this - but if it does lots of stuff for £200 - it might be worth a purchase!

Correct. I don't mean leave the heated seats on all the time, just for them to come back on at the previous setting when I switch the engine back on.

Otherwise the car would melt
