Well if u think the turbo is like that....... maybe a golf is not for you! because bar from the 3.2 v6, the 1.8t is one of best engines VW have made! Its strong, smooth and a tuners dream!

Maybe if you thought the turbo was a dog... this might be more for you

Getting back on topic 150K on a V6 should be ok as long as no signs of accident damage/abuse and find out how long the person selling it has owned it, dont expect the 4 motion to be cheap to repair though
Title: Re: advice please
Post by: oliver07 on 14 December 2009, 20:54
the gti t wasnt cheap to fix and I never really got it sorted after plus £500.00 just on the engine still falts coming up thought a normal asperated engine might be a better option.

Can you just explain to me in bullet proof format ..... how you came to that remark ? i.e. "Cos for a 150BHP car, they're sh!t."

Because i really dont understand how you can say that! They are quite literally bullet proof!

Sadly out of the box the Mk4 Golf handles poorly and 150bhp in a car that weights approx 1300Kg is never going to set the world on fire performance wise

Whilst the engine block itself maybe bullet proof, the pipe work and ancillaries fitted to the engine are quite poorly designed IMO   Also the number of common faults that occured seems rather high  :undecided:

my last golf cost me lots of money and it still wasnt right sorry all the turbo fans

Whats to stop this high mileage (150k is a lot of miles before anyone begs to differ) V6 from being the same?

Its a very narrow minded view to take imo.

Bullet proof format? Could you come up with bullet proof evidence that 'They are quite literally bullet proof!'?

Let me inform you that literally, if you took a gun to the car, it would not be 'proof' of bullets.

For a 150bhp car, (likely due to the weight) they are sh!t, gutless wonders. They run out of breath once on the move and the top speed is quite pathetic for a 1.8.

There are many other factors, such as the plauge of problems with sensors, water pumps that they ALL will have.

Sorry to jump in but this is not a debate about whether the 1.8T is better than a V6 the guy has had a bad experience with a 1.8T and wants a V6, thats his decision, the question is about high miles on a V6,

check the rear diff, listen for knocks and bangs over bumps, put it on full lock both ways whilst driving in a circle,

check the oil.

look at the last mot to see what advisories it had.

check for last timing chain/cambelt change. regular oil changes.

oh, and it drinks like george best at a free bar

take someone a bit savvy with you, or bribe another garage to give it a once over?

or if you want reliable go toyota.  :embarassed:
