Title: can you get a road tax refund on old car when you part x it with dealer??
Post by: maksta on 13 December 2009, 18:00
Hi all

to all of you who have part x'd your old car at a dealer - did you keep your old tax disc (as long as it had more than a month untill expiry), as i was wondering whether I could get some money back for it?! I dont see why the dealer should take the benefit, as the deal is for the car + mot'd.

what do you lot think??

Cheers
M

They'll want the tax as it's one less thing to fork out for when they sell your old car on.

Yeah thats what i thought! they make enough money from us all! I am collecting my new car tomorrow and I am going to tell him that I have filled a form to send it off, so tough luck. (i will really just take it out when I arrive at dealer and put it in my pocket!  )

You don't even need to say. Just take it put as soon as u arrive. I've always done that and never been asked for it!

I scrapped my last car, got £70 for it, and they told me I wasn't allowed to remove the tax disc, which was worth £80!

If you're part ex'ing at a main dealer then just take the old disc out, some will even give you the tax refund form for DVLA.

Cheers for the info. Yeah i will just take it out when i arrive at dealer.

I have now found the V14 form that you need for this. The one thing i didnt understand is whether you need to be the registered owner of the vehicle to get the refund, but this would be impossible, as you need the road tax up until that point of time!

Can someone confirm if the following steps should be fine:

1) Take road tax disc out when i get to dealer
2) Declare the car is being transferred to dealer (they fill in sec.9 of reg certificate and send to DVLA and they retain the rest of the certificate)
3) I can then immediately fill in the V14 form and send a claim for a refund for the remainder of full months?

Thanks
M

Yeah, that sounds about right.
Not so long ago anybody could just go into a Post Office and cash in a tax disc, but now you have to prove you're entitled to it and send it off to DVLA. Which is a good thing IMO

Depends on the dealer I suppose.

Mine gave me a cheque for the outstanding amount as I picked the GTi up. The tax disx was still in my old car. Quality service in my opinion that is!!

I forgot all about mine when I traded my old car in. Thankfully my dealer went and got it for me to get my £70 back.  As he said my car was just going straight to the auctions.
He mentioned something about regulations changing and garages can no longer cash them in. Anyone know if this is correct?

If you haven't agreed to leave the road tax than I would get the refund.

The likes of webuyanycar ask how much road tax is left on the car when they value it.  And when I've bought second hand cars I've always had to buy the road tax.

yeah that would be good if dealer would give me a cheque, but i doubt that very much!

i have not specifically agreed to leave the road tax in there, so im taking it with me! think i might get about 4 months worth and cost maybe 170ish, so thats around £56

It's a well known money spinner for the dealers, they cash them in as soon as the PX's come in as they will invariably not be sold straight away and the new purchaser has to pony up for the tax.

I always take mine out.

I cashed mine in from my old Passay when I bought my GTI, but only because I had just renewed it.

The DVLA really d*cked me around to be honest and it took over 2 months of writing letters and phoning to get them to send the cheque. There were multiple mistakes made at their end.

Got it in the end though.

Correct - dealers can only leave it in the car for the next owner so cash it in yasen

Bigger dealers can register cars themselves rather than having to trek to the local DVLA office, they can also apply for the refund on the tax disc within minutes of you leaving the dealership, and they dont have to send the disc back either. You only find this out when you fill in the V14, attach your disc and weeks later the DVLA tell you its already been encashed !
