Hello all,
I'm new to this forum. I just got a GTI and I'm wondering how everyone else has dealt with mounting the rear license plate. My bumper has no holes in it so it looks like I'll have to drill some. I don't want to ruin the looks of the car by having an off-center/crooked plate and I'd appreciate hearing anyone's experience in doing this. Thanks.

Won`t the dealer do it before you pick it up ?

The last time I changed a numberplate on a car I used some Sellotape sticky foam thingies. No nasty holes and very firm hold.
As above though, your dealer should put the plate on surely? Guessing you're not from the UK?

Sicily i think ?.

Ah, yep, seen the profile thingy now. Ta.
Guess they do things differently in different places.
Something like this Sare: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sellotape-Sticky-Fixer-Outdoor-20mmx20mm/dp/B0013DG7O6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=miscellaneous&qid=1260710690&sr=8-4

I could tell him but i`ve sworn a Omertá

Rhyso, do you think that will hold long-term? I like the idea.
simonpolly, no, the dealer won't be doing it.... that's extra. And yeah, breaking an omertá is bad, especially down here.
Exonian, thanks for the link.

My plates are held on by it and have been for the last 2 years. Normally have to renew the velcro every 12 months so I'm going to try those pads Exonian linked too

Seems like a good idea until someone decides they want your plate for cloning! the easiest steel in the world!

maybe but at least they won't have damaged the car ripping them off

Mine are always on with double sided tape pads. Never had any problems with them falling off. infact they're a pain in the ar$e to get off when I need to remove them - but at least there's no screw holes underneath.
The other downer with screws is that if you make it ever so slightly squint, its very difficult to fix!

Mine were drilled and screwed by the dealer, they are straight and it looks like they did a good job,i would get them drilled as the other sticky back plastic options seem a little heath robinson to me and won`t be as secure as a screw in a whole.

Ryhso,
How many points on the plate do you affix? I'm thinking a 5cm band of Velcro on each side of the plate should do the trick.

I got 4 points of contact - one on each end and then two in the middle top and bottom. Mine are fixed to plate holders though but the same principle applies  The ones on the end are the full height of the plate :afro:
