Title: 1.8T Engine temps?
Post by: Dave_IOW on 13 December 2009, 00:17
Hi all just a quick question, when driving about temp gauge goes up to nearly halfway as expected.

This is the strange thing (I think) occasionally when i look at the gauge it has shot all the way down to the first marking on the gauge, the first one it would reach when first warming up indicating its cold although this could be after driving for an hour?

The heaters inside still are very hot, even when this happens?

I expect as things get hot, fan kicks in and cools everything down, but to the first bar on temp gauge, seems abit extreme?

Is this normal/safe or is something like thermostat on way out?

Cheers Dave_IOW

if your getting the hot air through the vents etc then the thermostat is doing what it should try and get it on vag com to see if it throws up a coolant temp sensor fault as already said this could be the cause of your fault

Yeah poor mpg, about 23 but think most of that is due to my driving

As wazzzer will tell you, there is alot of stop start action on our island.

Is this sensor easy to fit?

yes sensor is easy to fit mate, as you look in the engine bay the sensor is on the right hand side of the head, secured with a clip. You should be able to see what colour sensor it is too (as there are 2 types)

Good to know mate, im sure im still not getting full boost.

I have changed DV and MAF as R-tech have said but still dont feel like it is giving all it has to give

Im going to stick in 007p instead of splitter, if it ever turns up, and see if that solves problem, or it might just be me being greedy and not satisfied with what ive got

Two quick questions though,

1 if i have splitter wound up as tight as it can go, surely that mean there was no chance of leakage through that?
2 if it isn't DV, could this sensor be causing my problem

Just waiting to see best place to root vacuum hose through to interior so i can see whats going on with it.
