Title: Car window scraper
Post by: VWKev on 12 December 2009, 23:43
Ice on the windows is in full force these days, so I'm looking for advice on a scraper for them. Weve had them in the past but seem to just very lightly scratch the glass and I dont want that happening again. Anyone recommend one that wont, or an alternative ?

Hate to say it, but de-icer ha!

Its absolutly dirt cheap at tesco or other leading brand supermarkets.

go to be very careful it isn't too warm or you'll end up with a cracked windscreen

I've got one of those windshield covers which covers the entire windscreen and is held in place by shutting the flaps in the doors.  Takes 30 seconds to fit and even less time to remove and does a good job of keeping the windscreen frost free

De-icer I find can be pretty useless and by the time you've finished spraying the screen its normally frozen again

Has anyone every actually got a cracked windscreen from hot water? Does it get that cold here? Or does it only apply to older maybe thiner windscreens?

As i have poured literally boiling water on many windscreens without problem? :/

I've heard of it happening but thankfully never seen it happen myself.  I was just advising against doing in case it did happen leaving Kev extremely pissed off

Alternatively park in a garage - no frost troubles at all then

I thought the de-icer stuff wasnt that good for your painwork if it got on there ?

Hot/warm water might be ok but cant be arsed doing that in the morning.

I think the cover might be a good idea. Will run these thoughts by the misses to see what she thinks.

I got one of the windscreen covers from Halfrauds. Costs £5, made of thin lightweight fabric that is water proof, meaning that when it gets wet it dries really quickly.

Has tabs on the end so you can shut it in the front doors.

Have to say, really impressed with it.

I just use a couple of measuring jugs filled from the cold water tap.  I found de-icer made my windscreen start smearing, I try to keep it as clean as poss

faaaakineeel... that is serious heaterz you has in your car... normally people just want the ice to melt!

hot water runs the risk of cracking your screen due to shock and once it gets cold again it freezes.

de-icer is crap for your paintwork and also your rubber seals.

i am liking the sound of the windscreen cover

 Something Like This (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Anti-Frost-Windscreen-Cover-Large/dp/B000WOV6LG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=garden&qid=1260778833&sr=8-3)

You can pick them up cheaper but that gives you an idea

Used mine last night - it worked a treat because it rained instead

I find closing the garage door works a treat, but for the really cold nights I stick the heater on in there too

Thats what I thought too, but in the GTI manual VW says I should spray my headlight washers with de-icer.  I havent done it and dont think I will, as I wouldnt use it on my windows either.
