Title: 1.8T advice
Post by: Khare on 12 December 2009, 23:30
Need some advice on the 20vT's.

Insurance is the same for the current gti than for a 1.8T, so it would be silly to over look it.

There are some on autotrader for around £1600 - £2000. What would you say about them?

Mileage wise around 50k-150k. What would you do in my shoes? Is buying a 1.8T with 150k miles risky business?

I recently bought mine on 113k with fsh and drives mint, paid £2200 for it (standard car-silver 5 door on 01 y-plate), i looked at and test drove 4 before i bought this one all between £2000 and £2850 and this was by far the best even though the air bag light was on. (cost £40 to get airbag light sorted)
Aslong as it's got proper fsh you should be ok imo and parts don't seem to be very expensive anyway... just be prepared for it to feel slow until you get it remapped!

remap would be the first mod no doubt. I'll get looking into them, ebay, autotrader, forums. They seem a sensible choice.

looking for something far cheaper than that + something not converted.
The conversion will seriously bump my insurance. Also tax runs out January so that would mean more further expenses and cambelt is also almost due. I was thinking in the region of £1500ish.

I think 1500 for a 1.8T that's not a dog is a little optimistic.

Yes, the prices have come down a bit, and there are some bargains about, but I think you need to think about a slightly higher budget, or a different car

+1 a 1.8t for £1500 is optimistic and i reckon you'd save money in the long run by upping your initial budget and getting a decent example to start with.

Hi mate.......

I bought a 2001 on a Y plate with 120,000 on the clock last week for £1900 and I'm more than happy with the car and the price............. I looked at quite a few and although the one I picked had a few minor bodywork issues {knocks on the bumpers} it was in my opinion the best looked after {engine & service wise}.......Full VW service history, every MOT certificate and every receipt for everything spent on it even down to bulbs.
I originally gave myself a budget of £5000 and looked at some 01 & 02 cars at £4000+ but decided to save my money because you a basically getting the same car and I have never been one who's bothered about what letter or number the registration plates got on it..........
Having had it a week now I am still more than happy with it but have found a few more little things that need to be done but I have £3000 to play with if necessary, I have been quoted £250 for the bodywork.
And the icing on the cake was the £187 fully comp insurance {£60 cheaper than my 130bhp Passat} and I declared the re-map......

yeah I know that it is optimistic but there are bargains out there. I need to work out my budget, real tight for money at the moment especially as my job contract is only temporary over Xmas period, so I might not be earning anything after that. Also got a couple of holidays planed for next year, including one in April which is not too far away. I'll try and extend my budget to £2000 but it will be hard, especially as insurance will be around £1300 when I renew (both on the current gti and on the 1.8T).

I did think of diesel. The GTTDI is about the same insurance as the 1.8T, but the golf S 130 PD is around £300 cheaper.

whatever your budget is, include the cost of a clutch, possibly flywheel if you intend to map a car with that many miles. You might not need it but you're going to be f*cked if you do!

And for the sake of all things vw let me have a good look over it before you start tinkering

Yeah that's my major worry too. As soon as I buy it I will want a remap, but then the clutch will go, that means another load of cash!

And don't worry, you and nick will be the car's godfathers

£1500 will get you a sh!tter.  Cambelt on Dai's motor isn't due for at least another 30K

If i had 2k to spend i'd rather have dai's.. at least you know its been looked after, and you can shout at him on here when it goes wrong  i cant see why it'd be more to insure than a 1.8t? i'm sure most insurance companies base it on the car the engine has come from in the first place.

and its down in the log book as a 1.8 complete with the correct engine number so its all above board :afro:

Plus if the engine blows because of the remap you can blame Nick and Topher

If I had been 20years younger I would have definitely bought it......... Unfortunately with teenage kids 2 door is not an option {even though is a second car} and over the years I have grown to dislike red coloured cars........if I was your age I would feel like a dog with two knobs driving it but at my age I would feel like mutton dressed like lamb.....

Ive just swapped a ZT for a 00 w plate with 110k on the clock , yes there are as few problems to sort but engine is working perfect even though its due a service, being done later!

From what I know the engines will be good for a lots of miles up to 200k easy if its properly maintained.
