Title: What do you think to this Spec and options ?
Post by: Fanters on 09 December 2009, 12:55
paid deposit to get on  a waiting list for a build slot in January and agreed a price(inc of vat rise)  with a decent enough discount and my initial spec was going to be :

GTI 5 DR DSG
White
18" Monza's
Bi Xenon Headlights
Cruise Control
Telephone Prep Rsap(bluetooth)
RCD 510 Touch screen radio
DAB Digital Radio Reception
ACC
Storage Pack

If you have any of these options then please give me your feedback.

I'm still not 100% sure if to go with Manual or DSG even after reading all the comments! do quite a bit of motorway driving so should it be DSG ?

Nice spec, but with the amount of motorway driving you saw you do, I'm not sure that you would need ACC.

I would stick with the DSG though. Especially as you are having cruise control. It never really works that well with manual cars. In a manual car, if you have to slow down, and change down for traffic, you have to accelerate manually until you get back into 6th gear before you can "resume" your set cruising speed when the road clears. DSG will do it all for you.

Keep in mind for iirc £156 the dealer will retrofit the cruise control. Ie its cheaper that way

Thanks guys.

Good tip on the cruise control. Thanks

I thought the ACC would be good for the motorway driving as i could put it in comfort (plus when the wife and the kids are all in they would prefer comfort)
Maybe i should try and test one with ACC.

and a year's less warranty

1 years less warrenty on a stalk that costs £50 to replace, If it does go wrong in that last year. Thats well worth paying £54 extra to have it factory fitted.

I personally wouldn't bother with:-

Bi Xenon Headlights

you are having cruise control... It never really works that well with manual cars.

To be blunt, that's nonsense. If you actually plan your direction and speed properly, then cruise control is easy to use. In fact, you begin to  see how inconsistent other drivers' motorway speeds are.

Also, certainly in my car (with factory cruise) you can 'accelerate' using only the cruise control stalk. The only major downside - to me, anyway - is you'll still have to change gear then re-set it.

get back into 6th gear before you can "resume" your set cruising speed

Factory fit cruise works above 19mph, so are you suggesting it should only be used in 6th gear..?

Heck, I potter about town with it set at 29 to avoid speeding fines.

^ Just as info the factory fit and dealer fit is exactly the same thing/part. Its just a replacment stalk and a bit of software work to activate it.

Why ? because of the cost ?

If your doing alot of motorway driving i would spec them. Its why i did.

Why? because of the cost ?

Mainly. Personal taste too, I'd rather the money went to the Lux pack, Winter pack and other toys like cruise control.

  [***flame suit, ON!***  ]

Supposedly, other drivers flash Xenon-equipped cars all the time assuming they've got their high-beams on....

I've always had just standard lights and i've always found them to dull especially in winter on motoroways and sometimes on unlit backroads. They are quite expensive but do look quite nice. i only wish i could get the rear LEDS also !

I can handle a bit of flashing ( i think !)

Each to their own and the usual applies, why not if you can afford them? :afro:

Storage pack im not sure of unless you really need the nets. The draws are not that big to make them useful imo.
The luxury pack if your going for the 18s so you get the curb view on the passenger mirror imo maybe worth looking at.

I'm suggesting that when you are on the motorway and have to slow to a crawl you are likely to be in a lower gear. When the road clears, you need to get back up to speed manually and then resume your set speed once in 6th gear to avoid it cancelling when you press the clutch to change gear. In an auto or dsg car, you could accelerate using the stalk from pottering to cruising speed in one go.

Cruise works really well and can be extremely usefull at all speeds if used correctly, what I am saying is that it works even better on an auto.

Thanks guys.

Maybe i should try and test one with ACC.

I've had some pretty stiff cars in the past and whilst they have been quite embarrassingly uncomfortable on B roads and around town, they have been perfectly fine on smooth A roads and motorways.

Hmm got to think of the wife, she could put her makeup in it (storage Pack). I wondered about the lux pack as i'm not speccing parking sensors (as i can park ) you might have a point there.

Thanks

My Audi A4 sport is quite a hard ride so i hoped by getting ACC it may be better, not just on motorways but also around town or some B roads.

Never had it in one of my cars but always thought it may be useful for motorway journeys ! If the price keeps rising i may drop this option to keep costs down.

If it makes your decision any easier, our last five cars - stretching seven years - have all had cruise control.

There are options I'd have liked on the GTI;- DSG, MFSW, leather, etc, but I could live without them, so I'm not bothered. For me, cruise control isn't one of these things - it's an essential.

I personally can't speak about it's functionality with DSG and I think I perhaps picked up dubber36's point wrongly a bit earlier.

Let us know your final spec decsion? :afro:

GTI 5 DR DSG  - has to be 5dr, la raion d'être of the Golf GTI. DSG excellent.
White - looks better on the 3dr
18" Monza's - ghastly
Bi Xenon Headlights - waste of money
Cruise Control - no brainer
Telephone Prep Rsap(bluetooth) - my dealer himself told me not to get this!
RCD 510 Touch screen radio - no brainer, RCD310 looks old-fashioned
DAB Digital Radio Reception - have no experience of DAB
ACC - MUST HAVE!!! Standard suspension is rock hard
Storage Pack - why not.

Thanks for the comments.
I have to get 5-dr as i have 2 kids and 1 of them is still very young so 3-dr is out.
The Monza's are a definite i really like them.
what is wrong with the VW telephone prep in your opinion or what have you heard ? I need a phone in the car so could get something else fitted afterwards like a parrot (not the bird !)

Not compatible with certain phones.
Fiscon has good compatibility.

Monza's - disagree. They really set the car off, it just doesn't look right on the standard 17s, especially in the white

Xenons - personal choice and depends where you do most your driving. I do a fair amount on unlit roads. I love them, and the initial up/down/left/right as the headlights level is just so smart. They're adaptive and cornering too. Don't care if people flash me (haven't had it yet in 2 weeks of owning the car), or that the DRLs are on all the time.

Looks to me, a good spec.

I agree though with comments made previoulsy about cruise control. I've got it on my Brera and I've used it only about a handfull of times. It's standard on the Alfa [like quite a few options on the GTi] but I wouldn't have paid for it were it a option.

Good luck!

I use ours a lot, on motorways down to 30mph areas (cruise control that is).

GTI 5 DR DSG - 5 door essential if you regularly take more than 1 passenger.  i HATE the whole climbing in and out of the back of a 3 door.  even as the driver, having to get out to let people in totally sucks!  DSG is pretty good, less interactive than the manaul, but more relaxing and better for WAGs.  can still have fun, but not the same tb100%h.

White - Too flashy for me

18" Monza's - essential.  really sets off the car better than the 17s.

Bi Xenon Headlights - I love the look of them.  Makes the car stand out from lesser golfs even more.  Performance wise is fine, but not essential for me in light-polluted London.  I have never been flashed yet!

Cruise Control - i don't have and apart from average speed zones, would never use.  like the DSG arguments, using the accelerator is a critical part of driving!

Telephone Prep Rsap(bluetooth) - i know it has less compatibility, but my phone works with it and it works great.  no faffing about with after market kits and you get voice control which you don't with the fiscon.

RCD 510 Touch screen radio - looks much better than the RCD310, esp the colour scheme which is much more in keeping with the rest of the interior.  (i.e. red/white rather than blue).  works very well.  SD card a great feature, though don't use massive capacity cards!

DAB Digital Radio Reception - not have as i wanted the reversing camera (which is absolutely brilliant!)

ACC - takes the edge off speed bumps and the pot-hole ridden roads in London.  Sport setting firms up the steering nicely.

Storage Pack - didn't bother with this as the 5 door hatch is practical enough as it is

[/quote]

Thanks

White is the only colour for me. I went to look at several different colours and found the dark colours black, grey etc... seem to make the car pretty annoymous where as the white just stands out from the crowd (although there seems to be quite a few white ones out there now)

Is the lux pack worth having ?

i got it to get the folding mirrors mainly.  defo worth it if you park it in a garage or tight road.

sad to report though that the folding mirrors aren't activated on the key fob and you have to do it inside the car manual and BEFORE you turn the ignition off!

Are you sure about that Keelaw? I can rotate mine with the ignition off and key out as long as I haven't opened the door.

Storage Pack. didn't get this because the storage drawers restrict leg room in the back, i.e. cant get your feet under the seats if you are carrying adult passengers in the back.

Cruise Control (Wouldnt bother with that)
Telephone Prep Rsap(bluetooth) (If you need it, get it)
RCD 510 Touch screen radio (Good choice)
DAB Digital Radio Reception (Love it myself, I have the DAB and I'm refusing to upgrade to an RNS510 because of it)

GTI 5 DR
A must if you have regular passengers.  3 Door looks better, but not practical for lots of people.  I have rear passengers about 10 times a year - so 3 door for me

DSG
Each to their own.  I took it this time as I regretted not having it on my ED30.  I may love it, or I may end up hating it.  I'll never know unless I try!  I spend a lot of time in traffic, so I thought it would be good to save my leg!

White
Colour is a personal taste thing.  I think a white car looks stunning.  Personally I wouldn't have one as I don't have the time to clean it - and it stands out a bit much for me.  Looks great when polished up though.

18" Monza's
I've never liked Monzas... but the 18" look much better than the 17".  If I was speccing a GTI I would spec the 18", eBay them, and buy something I liked instead!  A set of the gunmetal VWR wheels on a white car would look

Bi Xenon Headlights
Absolutely!  Sounds like a rip off... but they are soooo much better.  Like Kev says - only people who DON'T have them say they're a waste of money / sh1t!

Cruise Control
If you need it - fair enough.  I don't do enough motorway miles to warrant it.

Telephone Prep Rsap(bluetooth)
I want bluetooth - but deliberately left this one out.  I got a Fiscon kit the other day to retrofit as it has better compatibility.  Now I have an RNS510 and Fiscon kit under my desk - but no car to put them in

RCD 510 Touch screen radio
The standard stereo is pretty poop.  For a few quid you should add the Dynaudio - it makes the sound much better.  I have an RNS510 to fit, but I had to spec the RCD510 to get Dynaudio / reverse cam.  Should make about £250-300 on eBay though!

DAB Digital Radio Reception
The few times I've been in a car with DAB its been terrible.  The reception comes and goes. Perhaps after this digital switch over it will be better when they turn of analog signals.  Also depends a lot on where you are.  I can't have DAB as I've taken the reverse camera instead.  For the price of the reverse cam, it was rude not to!

ACC
I'm undecided whether this is a good idea or not.  I picked it because I feel that if I didn't I'd regret it.  I also feel that since I have picked it, I'll use it for a few weeks and then ignore it.  Its quite a pricey option.  I did notice the difference between the settings while driving down a long road with a LOT of speed bumps and changing the settings!  I'm not sure how stiff the Golf R suspension will be, so I thought I'd better take it just incase!

Storage Pack
I don't really have anything to store, and like above - it removes rear seat foot room.  If you need it, then fair enough...  Its a pretty cheap option.

DAB Digital Reception
Mobile Phone Prep Rsap (Bluetooth)
Lux Pack

Things I considered but didn't order :

Leather - Too Expensive and liked the cloth.
Parking Sensors - I can park !
Cruise Control - People advised me i wouln't use it and it can be added afterwards if required.
Storage Pack - Told it restricts rear footroom (thought it might be useful !)

(They did say they could get it before then end of Feb  but i declined that offer as i want a 10 Plate)

Cough cough cough *bullsh1t* cough cough!!
Not a hope in hell!!

Orders from September / October and now being given build weeks of around 10 (which means delivery in April / May really), so a December order would never be ready for Feb unless they actually have a car in a build slot and would swap it.  If its already in a build slot though, it'd probably be too late to change it now.

Spec:

GTI 5DR DSG
White
18 " Monza's
Bi Xenon Lights
ACC
RCD 510
DAB Digital Reception
Mobile Phone Prep Rsap (Bluetooth)
Lux Pack

Sounds good...
I can park too - but I had a little accident that ended up costing me £500 excess (or £1200 for the repair) when I reversed into something I couldnt see.  Parking sensors would have saved me!!!  Now they'll ALWAYS be on my options list.  1 mistake costs MUCH more than the sensors!
Also - how can you miss out the reverse cam for £150?!  Its great... and costs about £500 to retrofit!!!!

Bluetooth - if you've got a Nokia and plan on having one forever, then fair enough... if not, retrofit the Fiscon kit.

Good spec Fanters, you'll love it.
Cruise is an option I like and would look for in a secondhand car.  Cheap too.
Those average speed cameras are defeated by a press on the cruise button.

Ordered it at last. Had some issues as the dealer i was going through could not get an order in before January and i didn't want to get hit with a price rise !
Found another dealer which would give me 8 % Discount and then another (with 17.5 % Vat) !

Delivery in March (They did say they could get it before then end of Feb  but i declined that offer as i want a 10 Plate)
Fancy PMing me these dealers details because i feel i need to cancel my current order due to a dealer who is hopeless (huge understatment) and get mine elsewere.

I've gone through Stoke-on-Trent VW (was via the Work Fleet Dept so they got me this deal, but is a private buy not a company car) ! I also could have go the same deal via Coast to Coast Cars (broker) who where using inchcape VW in Stockport i think.

Can you get the reverse camera on its own, or do you need to spec the parking sensors too?

Plus ordering the DAB means you can't have the camera anyway.

I'm pretty sure you CAN have the camera without the sensors.  Never noticed the DAB on the spec list.  Definately can't have the cam with DAB!

A build week 9 won't be here in Feb, since week 9 is the first week in March!

I am surprised that with the weather we have had recently that you didn't order the winter pack

heated washer jets and heated cloth seats. I really don't see why anyone need them this side of the highlands. Im over 310Metres above sea level and never needed either, as long as you keep the consentration of screenwash right i have never had any problems with jets freezing in the past 20 years.
heated cloth seats i don't see the point of as they quickly go to body temp anyway.

Never needed them yet in 21 yearws of driving. Its' been cold and i admit that the heated seats would have been nice, but they would have been on for 5 mins then turned off.
I was trying to keep costs down so it was not an option i really thought i would regret not having.

I am glad that this is an option...since I ordered leather afterwards...by doing so I now only loose the electric side supports but still can have the heated seats (by ordering a winter-package)

My wife loves the heated seats and it is something we have used often during this cold snap. Heated water jets are brilliant on the golf. As a comparison, our other car is a SAAB and the other week we had both cars out. The Golf you could practically use the jets right away, on the SAAB it took ages. (With the correct concentration of fluid). It was -10 at the time.

Once again it is a personal choice, but it something we are glad we ordered.

It was -10 at my place the other day and I don't have the heated jets and they worked no problem.
With the correct washer fluid ratio, they shouldn't freeze. Even with the heated jets, if you don't have the correct ratio they will freeze, which to me makes little sense.

Doesn't heated seats come with leather as standard?!

Only if you order when the car gets build...!!!!
If later (after it left the factory) for different reasons...like full leather...different colour....or  taxwise........NOPE
