Title: Fiscon microphone position
Post by: countrytrucker on 09 December 2009, 10:57

I am getting my dealer to fit my phone kit in the car but I was wanting to know where the best microphone position is.

I had read on here that the VW position above the rear view mirror muffles the sound a bit.

Is it best at the top of the A pillar?

I always fit my Parrot microphones on the steering column between the wheel and the instruments - great sound, as you speak directly into it. Also, the VW steering column has a nice cut-out to site the microphone so that it just sticks out over the top. My Transit van has a factory-fit Bluetooth microphone on the A pillar and sound is not quite so good.

I've not thought of putting them on the instrument panel.

I've always stuck mine to the interior light. It's central so that the passenger can use it, and away from the wind noise around the A pillers.

The supplier originally fitted the mic behind the passenger-side grille in the lighting console. This didn't work at all. Had it moved to the top of the windscreen - driver's side and a couple of inches to the right of the lighting console. Much better quality as reported by callers.

Tried the following...

1. Top of the dash in the corner (i.e. in front of the tweeter) - crap sound at both ends, bad idea.
2. Top of the A Pillar next to the side window - better but not great - a bit of wind noise.
3. Top of the A pillar, tucked away next to the windscreen (i.e. around the corner from position 2) - best so far and very acceptable.

The Fiscon comes with two little mounting clips of different sizes and also a small sticky backed mounting ball. The smaller of the clips is pretty discreet and good for the pillars, but if you put it between the clocks the sticky backed ball will be perfect.

Top of the A frame for me. No wind noise at all and if it comes up in the conversation that I am driving, most folk comment on the clarity of the call.

Here's a quick pic for you. It looks a bit of a mess with the flash, but in reality, when you're in the driver's seat it's 95% invisible. I can just see the mic head poking out over the top of the steering column (if I look hard, which I rarely do when driving) and the Parrot control unit is hidden by the keys.

Thanks for the pic.

I left my kit up to the dealer yesterday and the car has been brought to their place today from their storage yard so I still haven't actually seen it.

I think they will be fitting that and the springs over the next few days so I want to be able to tell them where to fit the microphone.

I will be going up tomorrow hopefully and they are lending me a car for a few weeks to blast about in.
