Title: Golf R Beater - 380bhp VW Golf GTI

Volkswagen’s Golf GTI – a nice hot hatch with obscene amounts of all-round ability, but a bit lacking in the insanity that makes the Ford Focus RS and Renaultsport Megane R26.R so enthralling.

Until now. German tuning company Wimmer RS (responsible for the nuts 221mph Porsche GT2) has breathed some madness onto the GTI, upping its power to 380bhp – more than a Porsche 996 GT3 or 997 Carrera S – and its torque to 336lb ft, a better figure than the Audi TT RS. In Wimmer’s words, ‘the little sports car will definitely become a weapon’, and who are we to argue.

The gains come courtesy of an optimised turbo, a tweaked intake system, modified fuel pump and a high-grade steel sports exhaust system. Don’t forget the VW TSI engine’s high propensity to tuning, too. A stronger clutch is fitted to make sure all that power doesn’t make it go pop, while the top speed’s up to 166mph, a 17mph hike.

And fear not, as the suspension has been given a once-over, too. A height-adjustable HR coilover system is fitted to try and make the car more manageable. With just shy of 400bhp going through the front wheels, that’s going to be some task.

The styling tweaks are remarkably subtle, the only telltale signs of Wimmer’s work being some (presumably optional) stickers and those wheels, with 18, 19 and 20in rims available. They come wrapped in Dunlop Sport Maxx GT tyres.

If a loony Golf GTI floats your boat, then head to Wimmer’s website to spec yours. You better by quite fluent in German, though. If this is a bit tame, though, then that 221mph Porsche 911 is probably more your thing…

Same power as Hurdy is getting from his Mk5 Ed30. http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=136425.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=136425.0)
0-60 in 2 sets of front tyres

I'm beginning to think though that the EA888 engine in the Mk6 GTI might have a little bit more tuning potential than the EA113 which we're getting in the R.

Sounds tempting, but I already have to be careful feeding 275hp through my front wheels, especially now the roads are wet most of the time.

Exactly - 380bhp OK once you are at reasonable speed on the autobhan, but not much use on wet leafy lanes of the UK

I know what you mean about EA888 being better than EA113. It has a chain belt rather than a rubber one so it should have greater durability as well better tuning potential. I must say that 380 bhp is incredible. in a car as light as the Golf, it will eat some big bad sports cars for breakfast, including older 911s.

AFAIK the EA888 is chain-driven too. But I may be wrong...

Going off similar ED30's you can include cars such as new 911 turbos, RS4's and R8's

If I am not mistaken both the EA888 & EA113 engines use timing chain.
The Mk5 GTI uses the EA113 standard engine.
The Mk5 GTI Ed30 also uses the same EA113 engine but ECU tweaked to produce another 30hp.
The EA113 in the S3 & TTS has a new pistons, cams & injectors together with a fresh turbo & intercooler / internals are strengthened.
Golf R's engine is basically the same as the S3 but the engine management & exhaust system are optimised to get that little bit of extra power.
Golf R & Scirocco R use the EA113 because of cost reason (tuning the EA888 would have required extra R&D time) & availability off the shelf (EA113 already proven & using existing parts upped the VW Group's economies of scale) so to speak.
If an EA888 can be taken up to 380hp. To accomplish that in a EA113 engine is a "walk in the park."
Regal-auto has taken an S3 to 400hp / torque 342lb ft & the Mk5 GTI to 407hp / torque 380lb ft. Needless to say all these come with a price.
Personally I think 380hp on a Golf R should suffice. Anything more than 400hp would be an overkill & the basic characteristic of the car would have been completely transformed.
The real cracker or should I say the "joker" in the pack if VW does a limited run of the Golf R fitted with the 2.5L engine from the TTRS. They can call it "Golf RS." Wishful thinking!!!!!
More likely the forthcoming S3RS may get this engine.
Again this engine can be taken up to between 400-450hp without much problem.

Just stiffen up the rear end and put glue on your tyres, then you may be able to set of from a junction.. only once though

erh no not exactly, theres more then just a tweaked ecu. Bigger twin scroll turbo for one and lots of upgraded and strenghtened internals.

Engine Block from the ed30 is the same as the S3 engine block, before you add everything else chap
