Hi chaps
Got home today to find that my K03s Turbo waiting for me. So exited about it. Palled it out the box and started having a good nose round it. My hart sank when I sore a few cracks thaw.
Can people who have seen Ko3s please tell me if it’s ok or no good.
The 1st crack is above the waist gate (left side of this photo). This doesn’t look like its affecting any thing yet but I don’t know if left if it will get bigger.
The 2nd is also above the waist gate but on the other side. This is small but comes down from the cylinder like bit that holds the waist gate shaft.
The 3rd is on the exhorst inlet and this has 2 cracks in the dividing bit for the exhorts and waist gate.

After finding Miggies thread about his turbo he has one crack in same place as my K03s. but his one was a lot wores as the another crack went the other way.

doesn't look too bad mate...

If im ever going to buy a turbo second hand!
No matter what it looks like, i will always send it away for a recon!
You can get a full recon for around £300
Well worth the money
-
Looks a bit like my old one see here http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=134735.msg1213444;topicseen#msg1213444
Oops just read the bottom part of the thread :undecided:

Pretty sure they won't give you a new housing for that price Jake
-
nope that is a good point!
Dave got a full rebuild and hybrid for £300
But yeah, that is not housing
-
those cracks are on opposite sides of the wastegate, they don't appear to go all the way through but maybe you can get it pressure tested?
-
Cracked turbo will lose boost eventually. or lose oil or coolant. Depends how lucky you get to be honest :)
-
i dont think it's losing boost through there.. yet, no soot! it might hold up, or it might crack more.. but then again a brand new turbo might crack after 40k. It's all pot luck!

tbh mate it doesnt look that bad like jake said i had mine re conditioned, they also ported and polished the inside of the casing! mine has them type of cracks around the wastegate hole and he said its just the way that the casing is made it wont effect anything, unless the cracks are really deep and look like they might actually split the casing i wouldnt worry! however it probably is worth £200 to get the turbo over hauled before going through all the time effort and money included to get the turbo on your car (gaskets, new oil, bolts etc wateva else you may need to do the conversion!) that way you know you are working with a 'new turbo' as opposed to one you dont know how much life is left in it!
hope everything goes well for you mate need any help with the conversion just pm as ive had mine off a few times befor e now lol!
also consider the option of 'hybrid' the turbo especially if you do go down the route of having it reconditioned! i only paid an extra £100 for the hybrid and it will mean you get better gains! i know i certainly did.

Gains in the cost of the insurance
-
true but it means if wanted to get a bit more out of it it would be possible. hybrid is always better
-
True  I'm still trying to find a k03s, been looking for AGES now!
-
yeah ive heard good things about the ko3s hybrid! can reach around 280bhp with minimal lag.... the ihi turbo is also a good route but will cost alot more to do the conversion!

there is a pic of mine under the 'wastegate penny you can see the small cracks i suppose it gets covered by the penny when there is pressure inside the turbo tho so ...
-
This one looked like feck all. but it went right across the turbo and through the oil galley.
