Title: Newbie Satnav confusion
Post by: Yorkishire on 07 December 2009, 09:47
Hi,

I’ve owned a Mk5 GTI for about 6 weeks now.  It’s my 3rd Golf having previously own a Mk2 GTI for 13 years from  new and a Mk4 GTI T.

I’m totally happy with the motor, but confused over the MFD satnav.  Having read various posts, I’m still no wiser.

I have a factory fitted MFD2 with a 6 CD changer and IPod connection.  However, the facia doesn’t look like any I’ve seen pictured on this site.  It has chrome/silver knobs but has a ‘Tele’ button in the middle not a 'mute' button like the ones pictured.

My confusion started when I was looking for an updated mapping CD and the various types of head unit pictured didn't look like mine.  I’m guessing that it is a CD version as the DVD player is retro fitted.

Also does anyone know if there is a list of codes for factory fitted options, the type that are in the front of your service manual?

Should have added that the motor is an 06 plate.

Cheers

Si

Can you post a pic? The DVD version flashes up DVD-ROM on boot up (well it does on mine anyway!)

This is exactly the same as the one fitted in my motor.

The sliver button MFD2's are either revision B or C.

Have a look on here http://www.oemretrofits.co.uk/

Tele (according to the manual) is reserved for additional functions at a later date.

Hmmm, bit strange that. When you say your's has chrome buttons, so you just mean the 2 large rotary buttons or including the 6 function buttons at the bottom ?

I've had both the MFD2 CD version and the DVD version. Only the CD version AFAIK ever came with the "TELE" button, although mine had the chromed rotary buttons (which to be honest were an easy retrofit by someone). However, as you rightly say, the DVD version lost the "TELE" button infabour of the "MUTE" button. Also, as mentioned above, only the later type "C" DVD versions had the chromed 6 function buttons. Mines a Rev B and again only has the chromed rotary buttons and black function buttons.

Again as mentioned above, if its a DVD version, the splash screen at atart up will say "VW DVD NAVIGATION" quite clearly.

The two knobs are chrome nothing else as you say a simple addition.

Looking at the OEM website under VW - none of these look like mine as the 'esc' button is in the wrong place.  However looking at the Seats' the one in the middle (all Seats excpet Alamabra) is mine.

Makes me wonder if it was an after thought and someone has sold it on as an 'original fit,' hence my questioning of the optional extra codes.

Not to worry it works all I need is a set of instructions (currently bidding in ebay) and an upto date disc.

Yorkishire,

I have a colour PDF copy of the MFD2 (CD version) if you want. Let me know and I'll host it for you.

Norbreck21a - Thank you for the PDF, just the job.

I have now come to the conclusion that the system in my car is a MFD2 CD version.  All I need to do now is get a new CD map as the one I got with the car is a cheap copy.

Would still be interested in the optional extra codes though.

Thanks to evryone for your help.

Cheers

Just an update - in case any of you couldn't sleep - I have ordered a mapping CD from the local stealers - £138 but on the plus side I know it is genuine and will work.

Oh yeah, I see where your coming from, but still. That a ridicules amount to pay / charge just for a CD with some maps on. You can buy complete TomTom units for less than that (Im not saying its better as the built unit satnavs looks much smarter but just for comparison).
