Title: Help a newbie detailer who doesn't have much time...
Post by: steven_9709 on 06 December 2009, 17:13
Due to work commitments etc, never have much time to wash and polish my car so looking for some help and assistance on some products to buy that will do a good job and protect the bodywork, without having to spend all day doing it.

Really probably just need a wash mit (or two), some shampoo and then some wax/polish.

I have a carbon grey mk 6 gti to look after

Any help gratefully received

I am no expert but, to keep it nice without doing too much you should do the following as a minimum:

two buckets with grit guards in one or both [ two bucket washing method ]
good wash mit
good car shampoo
a spray for the wheels to break down the brake dust and tar
microfibre clothes for drying
possibly clay if you dont mind doing that
and a wax suitable for application by hand

checkout:
http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/

they have a lot of products

How about this:

http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=221&idcategory=18

or this:

http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=315&idcategory=18

Alternatively, a good basic starter kit without spending silly money would be:

Dodo Juice Tribble Wash Mit - £8.95
Meguiar's Gold Class Shampoo - £4.95
Meguiar's Deep Crystal Polish Step 2 - £7.95
Meguiar's No.16 Wax - £11.95

Then you would just need some good applicators and microfibre towels.

You can swap and change any of the products above but just wanted to give you somewhere to start from.

Thanks for the suggestions guys

The Meguiars NXT Wash & Wax Kit looks a good buy - would you recommend that or the single products? I'm guessing the single products are better as you can pick specific products instead of being limited to what's in the box.

I have a chemical guys miracle dryer, and a couple of microfibre cloths somewhere but what would you recommend as an applicator? Maybe some new microfibre cloths too?

Kits can be ok for some stuff but it depends what they come with, I also have been told countless times to go for other brands and not meguairs, most of their stuff is alright but you pay quite a premium for the name and there is better stuff out there for the same money, but yea I generally prefer to buy products seperatly so you can specalise everything you want for each thing.

for an applicator i mean something like this
http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/accessories/foam-wax-applicator/prod_89.html

if your microfibre clothes arnt good at soaking up the water which generally happens with age then yea it might be worth grabbing some new ones.

check out waxamomo site also for car cleaning stuff might work out better and i think you can still use the discount code on the forum

Question to waxamomo, will you eventually be stocking menzerna polishes? I need to do a big buy soon over £200 worth I could direct it your way but I need menzerna polishes, thats the only thing stopping me.

Yep I have to agree with Kdiz, the kits are great for saving money if they have got everything you want, otherwise you are just buying items you don't really need. I do think the NXT kit is quite good though for a starter to the car cleaning world.

KDIZ - Yes I am planning on stocking the Menzerna polishes, I was speaking to Menzerna last week actually, just trying to sort everything out. I'll be honest with you and I don't think it will be until the New Year that the items will be in stock on my site though.

I've been looking into this a bit now, and am thinking that maybe I don't even need a polish, considering my car and paint are brand new. What concerns me a bit is that all polishes seem tome to be somewhat abrasive. I don't want to be unnecessarily abrading my paint! Perhaps I'd be better off with a glaze and/or sealant - what do you think?

Could you recommend some?

I've also spotted this Ultima Paint Guard Plus on your site too and that looks like good stuff. What are your views on that?

Thanks :-)

You've probably seen this thread already, but if not, its one of a few I've read that are convincing me VW's painting isn't all its cracked up to be

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=136881.0

Certainly from my recent experiance, if you put the time in getting the car prepped right you then save time every wash for a while cos its so easy to get it back to "showroom". Its also kinda satisfying to see the end results

Ok, after much pondering, reading of threads and browsing of sites, I've kinda decided upon the following:

Wash mitt - http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=321&idcategory=3

Wheel mitt - http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=320&idcategory=11

Shampoo - http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=121&idcategory=3

Wax - http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=119&idcategory=34

Paint Guard - http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=238&idcategory=

Applicators - http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=101&idcategory=11

Microfibre cloths - http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=128&idcategory=16 & http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=129&idcategory=16

What's people's views, look ok? Suggest any alternatives? My main undecided is the wax...

for the best protection id suggest collinite waxs, 845 or 476 or 915 very good waxs.

845 is easier to apply in the winter imho!
915 is very good also but more work involved with the application.

any of the dodojuice range for uber glossy shine

wash mitt seems ok depends what you wana spend, iv heard good things about the dodo one but its £19 or whatever

i wouldnt go for a wheel mitt unless you got massive spokes so you can easily get your hand through [ i got a mk2 with stock wheels so a mitt is usless for me] I would use a wheel brush but thats just for my scenario

shampoo is alright

wouldnt use that wax i would go for a dodo supernatural one and make sure you go for a wax that suits your car colour

dont know much about sealents i dont really use them

aplicator will be fine

clothes cant really go wrong with that

That's my input anyway, I am not a pro tho [ maybe in 2 more months I will be! :P ]

Also add some dash wipes for good measure

Wash Mit and Wheel Mit are good choices

Shampoo is a good choice, some other idea's are the Meg's NXT, Dodo Juice Born to Be Mild or Sour Power.

Wax - I really like this wax, it is very easy to use. Your choice just depends on what you want to spend. Collinite is another wax to look at, 476 is great for durability throughout the winter. If you want to spend more than that, the Dodo Juice range at £29-£32 is a good range of waxes.

Paint Guard Plus - I would only really recommend this if you go with the Paint Prep Plus aswell. If you go this route, you don't need to buy a wax too. If you would prefer to go the wax route, get something like Dodo Juice Lime Prime to cleanse the paint first.

Applicators - these are better for applying wax:

http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=100&idcategory=11

The reason being is that they don't load of with much wax so there is less wax being wasted.

Microfibres - the ones you have chosen are good but not the best for buffing wax, although a bit more expensive, they are worth every extra penny, I would go for these:

http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=132&idcategory=16

or

http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=126&idcategory=16

Kdiz - Only the Wookies Fist from Dodo Juice is a £19.95 wash mitt, they also do a sheepskin one called the Tribble Mitt which is only £8.95.

Also, just to let you know, Dodo Juice Supernatural is a wax of it's own, it doesn't come in different colours, it is just the main range of Dodo waxes that come colour charged. Have a look here for the full range:

http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=37

Hope that helps a bit,

Chris

i dread to think how much ive spend on detailing products this last yr haha but at the end its what helps maintain your paint so its worth every penny!!

If you really are short of time then get a detailer out to your home to get a good base (clay, seal, wax). This makes it much easier and faster every time you wash. Why not get in touch with Guy @ Tona. Probably worth getting them out every 6 months or so.

Then just get your basic wash kit to keep it nice in between.

It's a choice between what's more valuable - your limited spare time or your cash.

Thanks for the advice

What's the durability and ease of application for the Meguiar's NXT Generation Tech Paste Wax 2.0 compared with the Collonite 476 for example?

Out of all of these, which would you say is the best for easy application, durability and shine?
Chemical Guy's Pete's 53 Paste Wax
Collinite 476s Super Doublecoat Wax 18oz
Collinite 915 Marque D'Elegance Wax
Collinite 845 Insulator Wax
Meguiar's No. 16 Paste Wax
Meguiar's NXT Generation Tech Paste Wax 2.0
Dodo Juice Blue Velvet
Dodo Juice Purple Haze
any others recommended?

Sorry for all the questions, want the best for my baby!!!

Collinite give great durability but are not the easiest to apply of buff off.

Dodo Juice Purple Haze if the easiest application and has very good durability (circa 3 months)

NXT Wax is very easy on off but not as good durability as Dodo

Meg's No.16, a very good all round wax for the money.

Dodo get's my vote, Purple Haze is probably the wax I use the most.

Don't apologise for questions, ask as many as you want

These are just my opinions, i'm sure others will add there opinions to confuse (I mean help) you even more
